Mortal Shell 2: Oops That Was a Good One Explained

You killed the one sheep that did nothing wrong and the game noticed.

The “Oops – That was a good one” pop-up in Mortal Shell 2 is a fake achievement triggered by killing a specific normal sheep. If you check your Steam achievements, PlayStation Trophies, or Xbox Achievements right after, you won’t find it listed anywhere. The joke is simple: most sheep in the game become hostile after being attacked, but this one is really innocent.

What Does “Oops That Was a Good One” Mean?

In Mortal Shell 2, nearly every ambient sheep roaming the world is a disguised enemy. Whacking one usually causes it to morph into a bipedal, aggressive two-legged demon goat/sheep monster (the same type encountered during the Shepherd fight). Because players are conditioned to kill sheep on sight to harvest Sheephead Totems and to prevent surprise ambushes, you end up attacking every farm animal you encounter.

However, the “Oops, that was a good one” notification displays when you strike a harmless white sheep. Unlike the rest, this one was a genuine livestock animal rather than a disguised demon. The developer’s side joke calls you out for ruthlessly slaying a harmless creature out of paranoia. The game briefly displays the pop-up in the same style as an achievement notification, which is why it’s easy to assume you just unlocked a hidden trophy.

Cold Symmetry included multiple joke pop-ups to troll players for bad habits. Like if you attack Merrick the Merchant’s dog (Louis) at Marrow Keep. It also shows a fake achievement banner on your HUD, followed by Merrick turning hostile on the spot.

Sheephead Totem Upgrades and Mechanics

Most players trigger this fake event because they regularly farm sheep to upgrade the Sheephead Totem, which allows you to transform into a sheep once equipped and offers unique perks:

  • Level 1: Grants base sheep transformation.
  • Level 2 (Graze): Lets you graze on grass to become invisible to nearby enemies. They will ignore you completely and stand watching, though you remain stationary during the animation.
  • Level 3: Unlocks advanced passive effects and skills.

If you pair the Sheephead Totem with the Level 3 Arbiter’s Prize Tarstone (upgraded for permanent Bloodcurse), you can use sheep form to restore health effectively.

  • Accumulate Bloodcurse stacks using the Arbiter’s Prize. Higher stack counts increase your heal percentage per shift.
  • Equip the Sheephead Totem in your active slot.
  • Quickly spam the active transform button (D-Pad Down on controller) to toggle in and out of your sheep form.
  • Every time you transform, it uses up a stack of Bloodcurse to heal you, so you can top off your health without wasting any Mether’s Pulses.

It’s very rare to find enough Sheephead Totems to max out your level in one playthrough since they spawn in specific locations on the map. While some players have managed to collect 13 in a single game, you’ll usually need to enter New Game+ or scour the map for every last hidden spawn to hit the cap.
