How to Beat Sasaki Ganryu (First Time) in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Here's how to break this hat-wearer swordsmans stamina gauge.

Sasaki Ganryu is the first real skill check in Onimusha: Way of the Sword that takes place on the wooden bridge during The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu. While the Prologue scrap against Yoshioka Seijuro was little more than a warm-up, this boss fight at the Kiyomizu-dera lays down the ground rules for every major boss encounter going forward. Ganryu brings an aggressive kit, feints, and an armored straw hat that laughs off headshots, but breaking his moves comes down to reading his tells, bleeding his stamina bar, and capitalizing on Break Issen windows.

Sasaki Ganryu Boss Fight Tips

  • Tag the Spirit Mirror first: Always use the nearby Spirit Mirror before stepping onto the veranda to set a checkpoint and top off all your healing gourds so you enter the arena fully stocked.
  • Focus on the Stamina bar: Ganryu’s top health bar is beefy, but his red stamina meter is his vulnerability. Deflecting and parrying his sword strikes melts his posture way faster than chipping away with basic neutral swings.
  • Respect the three-hit limit: Do not get greedy. Whenever you stun Ganryu or deflect a combo, land two to three strikes at most. If you commit to a fourth hit, he will parry and punish you immediately.
  • Weapons can be parried; limbs cannot: Any strike the boss delivers with his nodachi can be deflected or parried. Unarmed attacks, like his jumping kicks and grabs, will blow right through your block. These demand a clean dodge roll.
  • Win the blade clashes: When Ganryu initiates a direct sword clash, react to his swing angle. Answer a horizontal slash with a vertical cut, or counter a vertical blow with a horizontal sweep. Once blades lock dead-center, hammer the attack button quickly to shove him off balance and break his stance.
  • Mind his armored hat: Musashi even calls it out mid-fight, “Ganryu’s hat is reinforced metal.” Aiming high during usual trades gives less return, so prioritize body strikes.

How to Beat Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha – The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu

Ganryu Phase One

Sasaki Ganryu Jump Slash attack

Jump Slash: Ganryu leaps into the air and brings his weapon crashing down onto Musashi. Watch his jump height. On the weapon slash, he stays relatively low on the arc where you can dodge sideways, but the better play is to parry right as his blade falls. A perfect deflect will chunk his stamina bar and leave him wide open for two quick counter-slashes.

Sasaki Ganryu Leaping Kick attack

Leaping Kick: Ganryu springs higher into the air and extends his foot down rather than brandishing his blade. Because this is a no-weapon strike, blocking gets you staggered and damaged. Dodge right before his boot hits the ground. Keep your finger on guard right after dodging, as he can link a quick sword sweep just behind the kick.

Sasaki Ganryu Crouch and Dash Attack

Crouch and Dash Attack: Ganryu crouches low and sprints across the arena, either to close the distance or slide behind Musashi to flank his blind spot. He follows the sprint with an upward slash, an underhand back-slash, or a quick thrust. Track his run and hold off parry until his sprint animation finishes. Wait out the delayed swing, deflect the trailing slash, and punish. If he slips around your back, quickly re-center your camera and deflect the follow-up stab.

Sasaki Ganryu Single and Multi-Stab move

Single and Multi-Stab: Ganryu pulls his blade back along his hip, drops low with the weapon’s tip leveled at Musashi’s chest. He will unleash either a single heavy lunging thrust or three consecutive stabs. The single thrust has a slight wind-up you can parry on reaction. For the triple stab, deflect the first two, note the brief pause before the third strike, and deflect the delayed final attack. That third deflect will put him in a big recovery.

Musashi executed Break Issen on Sasaki Ganryu

Reducing Ganryu’s red stamina bar to nil will break his stance and give you a chance for the Break Issen. Press the finisher to trigger a target-selection reticle with different colored strike points across his body:

  • Red Nodes (Damage): Target the torso or vital areas marked in red to cash in for massive raw damage.
  • Purple Nodes (Souls): Target purple ones to sacrifice burst damage in exchange for a shower of restorative souls.

Unless you burned through your healing items and need yellow or blue souls to survive and for Oni Power, you should go with the red target.

Ganryu Phase Two

Sasaki Ganryu Second Phase - Onimusha Way of the Sword

First successful Break Issen drops Ganryu below half health, followed by a short cutscene. His skin turns gray, dark Genma corruption veins light up his chest, and he gets much more aggressive. The boss keeps the same sword moveset from the first phase, but his unarmed strikes become far more deadly.

Sasaki Ganryu Jump Kick and Grab move

Jump Kick and Grab: In the second phase, Ganryu upgrades his high-flying dropkick into a powerful grapple chain. After the airborne kick, he lunges forward with his Genma gauntlet to snatch Musashi by the throat.

  • The Counter: Instantly double dodge Ganryu’s every high jump. Evade the dropkick, then immediately dodge-roll a second time sideways as his arm shoots forward. Ganryu overcommits to the grab animation, whiffing completely, which leaves him stuck in place for a few seconds. Use that opening to get behind the beast and deliver three strikes one after another for some serious damage.

Keep deflecting his lunges and jump slashes while dodging the Grab. Drain his stamina bar a second time and execute the final Break Issen to end the duel. A final cutscene will trigger after Ganryu’s defeat, where he curses his gauntlet and runs off into the Kiyomizu mist.
