No, you cannot keep or save Harros in Mortal Shell 2. Getting ripped out of his Shell in the prologue encounter with the Tar Golem is a hardcoded story event. Even if you manage to beat the boss in the opening section, the outcome will not change. Read on to learn why Harros cannot be saved and how to find a replacement Shell to carry on.
Can You Keep the Harros Shell in Mortal Shell 2?

No, you cannot keep Harros. He is the Shell you start the game in, progress through the opening ruins with The Iconoclast wielded until you enter the arena with the Tar Golem, and the boss kills him in the end. After that, you’ll be back in your bare Harbinger form, which is how the Marrow Keep’s inhabitants first see you. Harros’s death is a scripted story beat, so there’s no secret option or workaround to avoid it.
Beyond the story, Harros is just a tutorial vessel with no dedicated skill tree, upgrade paths, or unlockable memory sequences. After his defeat in the chamber, his Shell is permanently lost. I know many players liked him more than the other Shells, so I understand wanting to keep him. As far as we have found, there’s no quest, item, or New Game+ trick that brings him back.
What Happens When You Defeat the Tar Golem?

If you perfect your parries and dodges during the opening tutorial and drop the Tar Golem to 1 HP, the game triggers a loss scene anyway. You still leave without Harros, and beating the boss unlocks no secret paths.
On PC, you will earn an achievement for your trouble, but it’s just a cosmetic badge for your profile. Your character will be stripped back down to naked Foundling state and sent off to the Marrow Keep to start from scratch.
How to Find Replacement Shells in Mortal Shell 2

While losing the original game’s poster child right out of the gate is disappointing, Mortal Shell 2 replaces him with 8 playable Shells you can find and unlock throughout the Fainweald.
- Map Markers: Unclaimed Shells show up on your overworld map tagged as Unknown Shells.
- Memory Visions: Approaching a new Shell forces you to briefly inhabit it and play through a brief memory section before you can claim it permanently for your journey.
- Skill Trees & Mechanics: Unlike the brief tutorial part with Harros, every new Shell has its own talent tree, bonding mechanics, and combat skills.
Why isn’t Harros Playable?
Harros was given a basic skill during the prologue, but the Shell lacks a full talent tree and bonding upgrades in the game files. The prologue death scene is the narrative bridge between the first game and Mortal Shell 2, forcing you to adapt to the new roster of Shells.
Some players think the empty Shell beds in front of Genessa’s arena and the empty key chest alcoves in the elevator room leading to the soul launchers point to extra Shells arriving in future DLC. That’s speculation, and nothing has been confirmed. Let’s stick with what we have and hope for the best!
