Mortal Shell 2

Mortal Shell II

Mortal Shell 2 is an action RPG that puts you in a broken, unforgiving world. The combat moves fast and challenges on every turn. You play as a hollow vessel that can occupy the remains of dead warriors Shells, using their bodies to survive against brutal enemies. There are no easy wins here. You track down false gods and strike them down, one by one. The world is ruined, and your goal is simple: pick through the wreckage, find a Shell that fits your playstyle, and fight until you stop moving.

Overview

Mortal Shell II is a dark-fantasy action RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. Building on the 2020 cult hit, the sequel trades linear zones for a compact, interconnected open world containing over 60 dungeons. The game removes the traditional stamina bar to make combat faster and more aggressive while keeping the franchise's signature Harden mechanic, posture breaks, and execution strikes.

What is Mortal Shell II about?

You play as the Harbinger, a mysterious prophesied being tasked with reclaiming the Ova of the Undermether from the creatures and zealots guarding it. Instead of playing as a conventional hero with a single fixed class, you find the remains of fallen warriors and possess their bodies, called Shells. Each Shell has its own strengths, abilities, and memories that function as a different combat build.

The world is a jagged, dark-fantasy landscape of ruined temples, overgrown forests, icy graves, and bone-built citadels linked by narrow, winding paths. The map is dense. It avoids the long, empty stretches that clog most open world games. Instead, the geography forces consistent discovery. You journey through these zones to find Shells, new weapons, and hidden paths. Every corner hides an optional dungeon or a stray upgrade. There is no filler here, just a tight, deliberate path through a dead kingdom.

Combat is the Biggest Change

The game removes the traditional stamina bar to make combat faster and more aggressive while keeping the franchise's signature Harden mechanic, posture breaks, and execution strikes.

This gives the sequel a faster, more aggressive feel. You can change the way you approach encounters by switching Shells, weapons, and abilities instead of just increasing a character's stats. Weapon customization is way deeper now with melee options, ranged options/sidearms, and extensive upgrade paths.

The Shell System

Shells are the game's answer to traditional character classes. The sequel has eight playable Shells, each a different warrior with its own identity, skills, and preferred play style. You find their bodies in the world, possess them, and reveal their stories through memories.

This system is one of the game's strongest unique features because Shell changes can massively impact combat. A more durable Shell can encourage direct melee combat, while another may reward mobility, critical hits, special abilities, or more unusual tactics.

World and Exploration

The world is best described as a compact, interconnected space, not an open-world slog. It features over 60 dungeons. You will find hidden paths and optional areas branching off the main route. The developer wants players to step away from the golden path, and if you do, you'll find extra Shells, weapons, upgrades, and other discoveries. Exploration is the point of the game.

Cold Symmetry took the core idea of inhabiting dead warriors and built a massive Souls-like RPG around it.

Mortal Shell 2 Review

“Mortal Shell 2 takes the strange Soulslike from 2020 and lets it off the leash. The result is bigger, meaner, weirder, and packed with enough good ideas to make the occasional bug or disappointing boss easy to grumble about and then keep playing.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mortal Shell 2 a direct sequel?

Yes, but it's also a standalone sequel. You are not required to have played the original game to understand or play it.

Is Mortal Shell 2 a Souls-like?

It is a Souls-like. You get the familiar fundamentals: demanding real-time combat, difficult enemies and bosses, checkpoints, and resource loss when you die. It keeps the focus on exploration and deliberate timing but the game shifts the formula. It drops the stamina bar and the focus moves to Shell swapping, Hardening, and posture.

How many Shells are in the game?

There are 8 Shells (possessed bodies of fallen warriors) scattered across the world, each with unique stat profiles, active skills, and playstyles.

Is Mortal Shell 2 open-world?

Yes, but it's a compact interconnected open world, rather than a giant open-world RPG in the Elden Ring sense. The developers emphasize density and exploration over sheer map size.

Is Mortal Shell 2 multiplayer or co-op?

No. It's a single-player game. Steam lists single-player as its supported mode.

Is there an easy mode?

There is not a conventional Easy/Normal/Hard selector. The game uses alternative systems to adjust challenge, including the Slayer Seal for a more forgiving experience and Night Mode/Gloombound Flame for Hard difficuilty. More recently, the September 5, 2026 update added an optional Adaptive Difficulty setting that dynamically adjusts enemy strength based on your performance.

Is Mortal Shell 2 on Game Pass?

The game is cloud playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, but a game purchase is required. In other words, this is not the same as the game being included in the Game Pass catalog as a normal included title.

Is Mortal Shell 2 worth playing if I like Dark Souls or Elden Ring?

You should play it. The game stays true to the Souls-like lineage while the shell system and stamina-free combat force you to learn a new thing. It's a tighter experience than Elden Ring. You get the exploration you want without the bloat of a massive map. It works.
