How to Get Shell Points in Mortal Shell 2

Gloom pays the bills in Mortal Shell 2, and Shell Points are your reward for spending it.

Shell Points are the skill currency used to improve a Shell’s passive abilities in Mortal Shell 2. You can get Shell Points by leveling your Harbinger with Gloom, then spend them on the ability tree of the Shell currently in use. Since you need Glimpses to unlock the higher-tier abilities, you’ll want to get a good control on both progression systems if you want to build a really strong character.

Shell Points are shared across all Shells. While you can reallocate them for free, switching to a new Shell requires you to manually refund your previous build and reassign the points to your current setup.

How to Earn Shell Points in Mortal Shell 2

Level Up Your Harbinger at a Beacon

The main way to get Shell Points is to earn Gloom, take it to a Beacon, and use it to increase your Harbinger level.

Gloom can be obtained by defeating enemies, so normal exploration already moves you toward the next Shell Point milestone. Once leveling is available, rest at a Beacon and select the level-up option. The Level Up screen shows the cost of the next level along with the rewards you will receive, including the Shell Point track at the bottom of the menu.

Note: You do not receive a Shell Point at every Harbinger level. Instead, they are granted at specific progression milestones, and these rewards become less frequent as your Harbinger grows stronger. Consider your Harbinger level as the main progression path and the Shell Points as milestone bonuses earned along the way.

Farm Gloom to Reach More Shell Point Milestones

To farm Gloom effectively, find a Beacon near a group of enemies. Kill all of them, rest at the Beacon to make them respawn, and repeat. It’s better to focus on quick, dense enemy groups than trying to hunt down certain high-value targets. The giant mantis around Mushroom Village used to be a popular early farming target, but it was patched. Focus on regular enemy packs around your current region instead to collect Gloom.

Spend your Gloom as you go. Keeping a large amount of it while exploring new dungeons is just asking for trouble, and it’ll only slow down your Harbinger levels and limit you from earning more Shell Points.

When Can You Start Earning Shell Points?

Progress through the opening sequence and defeat the Tar Golem. After you reach Marrow Keep, the central Beacon will unlock the Harbinger leveling function. From that point onward, Beacons will provide access to the full level-up system. Once the system is active, continuously pay attention to the Shell Point reward preview whenever you are close to the next level. That makes it easy to decide when a Gloom farming run is actually worth doing.

What are Shell Points Used For?

Shell Points unlock and improve the passive abilities in a Shell’s skill tree. Every Shell has a separate ability tree with perks customized to its playstyle. These upgrades can improve survivability, damage, healing, resource gain, defensive tools, or other Shell-specific mechanics.

Mortal Shell 2 Passive Abilities Tree to spend Shell Points.

To spend Shell Points:

  1. Rest at a Beacon, or return to Marrow Keep.
  2. Open the Level Up interface at the Beacon, or speak to the Shell Keeper.
  3. Switch to the Shell upgrade panel.
  4. Select an unlocked passive ability.
  5. Spend Shell Points to buy its next rank.

A Shell’s ability panel appears after you have unlocked that Shell’s Memories. Until then, you can earn Shell Points normally, but you cannot invest them into that Shell’s perks.

Each available perk can be purchased or upgraded with Shell Points. Stronger versions of the same passive require extra points, so spending everything on one ability can give you a more powerful effect but leaves fewer points for other upgrades.

That’s where your Mortal Shell 2 build starts to take shape. I’d suggest looking over the whole tree before dumping points into the first passive that catches your eye. Some abilities get way better once you unlock the deeper tiers, and your Shell has a limit on how many perks you can have active at once.

How to Unlock More Shell Abilities

Glimpse location Mortal Shell 2

You need Glimpses to unlock a Shell’s Memories and get access to its skill tree. After finding your first Shell, collect a Glimpse and return to Marrow Keep. Speak with Zhirelle and choose the first option, Shell Bonding, to deepen your bond with the Shell. Use the Glimpse when prompted to unlock the first section of that Shell’s Memories.

The first Glimpse can be found at Widow’s Overlook Beacon, one of the early northern Beacons. For more, you can get Glimpses via exploration, certain chests, cleansing Corrupted Beacons, bosses, and some NPC interactions.

Are Shell Points Shared Between Shells?

Yes. This is one of the more confusing parts of Mortal Shell 2.

The Shell Points you earn form a shared pool, while each Shell has its own separate ability tree and capacity. Switching to another Shell does not generate a new batch of points for that character. This also explains why changing Shells can be awkward. Points you have already invested remain connected to the current ability setup until you refund them, so moving your investment to another Shell usually means going back through the respec process.

My advice is to treat your Shell Point pool as one shared budget. Pick a main Shell early, build it properly, and only start moving points around when you have a reason to change your playstyle.

How to Refund Shell Points

Shell Points are fully refundable, and there is no respec cost.

Open the Shell’s ability menu and use the refund command shown on the screen. You can remove an individual investment to make a small adjustment, or refund the whole allocation and rebuild the Shell from scratch. This makes respecs completely safe, so you are free to test passives, change your build before a boss, or rework your setup when you unlock a new Shell.

Although you can refund your Shell Points whenever you want, the Glimpses you spend on Bond progression are permanent. Once you’ve committed them to a Shell’s Bond, you can’t get them back.
