Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign Walkthrough

How to solve every floodgate puzzle and drag the River Master back down to earth.

Lost Chapter: Heavenfall is a Campaign quest in the northern Kaifeng area of Where Winds Meet, leading you through Bloodscale territory, flooded passages, and the Gonggong Crane Base before you confront the River Master. The side quest mixes stealth, combat, water puzzles, underwater exploration, platforming, and two tough boss fights. Completing it also unlocks the repeatable Campaign version of the World Boss and opens up additional content in the Heavenfall.

How to Unlock Heavenfall Campaign Quest

To start the Heavenfall Campaign, head to the northernmost part of Kaifeng City in the Roaring Sands region. Approach the Heavenfall Crossing Boundary Stone, and once you get close to the quest perimeter, a cutscene will play out where a carrier bird delivers you a letter from Kaifeng Prefecture Consultant Zhang Cuo regarding the River Master’s return.

How to Complete Heavenfall in Where Winds Meet

Talk to Zhang Cuo

Talk to Zhang Cuo - Where Winds Meet Gameplay Heavenfall Campaign

Follow the quest marker at the Heavenfall Docks overlooking the Yellow River. You will find Zhang Cuo lounging under a tree, drinking Heavenfall Crossing’s signature wine “Red Sleeve Special.” Talk to him and select the “Have a drink” dialogue prompt.

Exhaust the dialogue. Zhang Cuo reveals that the River Master intends to hand over the Imperial Jade Seal—an ancient relic that can calm river storms or raise floods—to Khitan warriors. Since the local Bloodscale Hall syndicate doesn’t trust imperial officials, Zhang Cuo tasks you with meeting an inside operative.

Follow the Code to Find the Real Informant

To move unseen inside the denied area, you need Zhang Cuo’s undercover asset. Head into the search area to find three informants:

  • Zhou Bapi: A hiring manager recruiting laborers to clean chamber pots.
  • Donfraud: A fortune teller claiming mastery over I Ching and plum blossom divination.
  • Er Ma: A salted fish vendor who sits behind a fish cleaning table.

Talk to Er Ma to enter quest - Where Winds Meet Gameplay Heavenfall Campaign

Approach Er Ma and talk to him. Recite the secret code phrase provided by Zhang Cuo: “Dangled bait still needs someone willing to take it. To untie the knot, you need the one who tied it.”

After that, Er Ma will confirm being the real contact.

Note: After you have spoken with the informant, you will be restricted to only quest areas and locked out of free roam until its completion. Make sure your weapons are repaired, healing draughts are stocked, and your martial setup is ready. Equip Veil of Stillness and Touch of Death Mystic Skills for stealth, Tai Chi to solve puzzles, and a Martial Arts weapon like Strategic Sword. If starting from open exploration, advance the in-game clock to Zi Hour.

Follow Er Ma and Defeat the Guards

Follow Er Ma into the settlement. At the entrance, the Bloodscale Hall guards will intercept you to verify your identity before they can give you entry. Er Ma bluffs through with the syndicate’s code phrases (“Ghost ferry meets the Dragon King”), and they will let you enter with no bloodshed. Once past the gates, follow Er Ma into the camp until he spots the gear key hanging from a large wooden crane above a bonfire.

Defeat guards at water puzzle area - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

Four Bloodscale Warriors guard the main courtyard you should take down first:

  • Use Veil of Stillness and crouch-walk behind the guard sitting by the campfire to execute him with Touch of Death.
  • Take down the second guard facing the nearby shack.
  • Eliminate the third sentry stationed next to the gear key platform.
  • Finish the lone guard looking out over the water.
(If stealth breaks, group them up and burn them down with AoE burst skills).

If you prefer a direct fight, aggroing the group requires heavy parrying and dodging, as undertuned gear will cause enemies to deal massive chunk damage.

Use the Mohist Hill’s Mechanism to Lower the Gear Key

First waterwheel puzzle solution - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

With the courtyard cleared, climb onto the wooden crane platform and interact with the Crane Helm. Rotate the crane arm left until the gear mask hangs above Er Ma’s raft on the water. Lower the winch cable till the gear key locks onto the raft and a cutscene triggers. Next, walk to the riverbank and interact with the Goatskin Rafts prompt to get onto the raft and set sail downriver with Er Ma.

Solve the Tai Chi Water Puzzle to Open the Floodgate

Er Ma rides the boat downstream until a heavy timber watergate halts progress. After docking left, use the Hero’s Tomb post to restore Young Hero’s health and flasks. Kill the four Bloodgate Spear guards in the area, then search the nearby hut for two treasure chests; the second chest contains the antique item Zhu Yu – Dragon’s Rite Scroll.

Exit through the back door into the mechanism courtyard to reach the puzzle area:

  • Dispatch the ambush guard hidden inside the wooden barrel.
  • Step onto the pressure plate on the ground to trigger the dragonhead statue.
  • The statue will spew a continuous stream of water at your location.
  • Activate Tai Chi to catch the water column, aim your reticle at the gear mechanism on the floodgate tower, and release to redirect the flow.
  • Due to the water pressure, the waterwheel will spin and raise the gate.

Head back to the dock, board Er Ma’s raft, and continue downriver through the opened gate.

Investigate the Abandoned Rain Warehouse and Solve the Second Water Puzzle

Next, you will dock at the Rain-proof Granary where the next objective will update to investigate the Abandoned Rain Warehouse. Loot the small side hut chest near the dock brazier, then interact with the grapple prompt to launch to the top, and defeat the guard on the walkway roof. Cross the wooden bridge, climb down or drop into the courtyard, and defeat the patrol guards around the fire pit and near the water statue.

Rotate the crane to either left or right - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

The dragonhead fountain in this yard is blocked by a wooden box suspended from a second crane. Climb the crane tower ladders and take the controls at the Crane Helm. Rotate the crane boom either left or right until the crate clears the line of fire between the water stream and the gate mechanism.

To open the second floodgate, stand on the pressure plate to let the dragonhead release water, then execute Tai Chi to redirect the jet onto the gate receiver to open the gate. Jump into the waterway and swim over to the raft to trigger the travel cutscene toward the Gonggong Crane Base.

Defeat Bloodscale Hall Leader Feng Ruzhi

After docking at the Tide Platform base, follow the wooden stairs to the main arena. Kill four guards on the platform to summon Feng Ruzhi into the arena.

Feng Ruzhi boss - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

Feng Ruzhi leaps high into the air for an unblockable diving grab. Because the attack tracks aggressively, never dodge backward. Instead, dodge roll forward underneath her as she ascends to exploit her flight angle. Her usual spear-and-blade flurries conclude with a red glint thrust. Deflect this final strike to deal great Qi posture damage.

Note: Feng Ruzhi’s Campaign version restricts her full aggression pattern to Phase 2, making Phase 1 the optimal window to build resources.

Strategy: Keep pressure on her guard. Depleting her Qi bar opens windows for heavy Execute strikes. In Phase 2, her attack frequency increases, requiring immediate parries following her gap closers.

For a complete breakdown of her attack patterns, phase mechanics, recommended setups, and strategies to beat her, read our guide about the Feng Ruzhi boss fight.

Turn the Dial to Open the Floodgate

After dealing with the boss, go upstairs to the right of the arena and eliminate two non-stealthable guards. Next, interact with the wooden winch dial beside the building entrance. Mash the interaction button to crank open the submerged iron gate below, allowing Er Ma’s boat inside the Gonggong Crane Base.

Drop into the water, swim to the raft to get on it, and approach Er Ma for the next cutscene.

Dive into the Yellow River Depths and Enter the Underground Canal

Dive into yellow river - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

The underwater part is one of the easiest places to waste time, so check the path carefully before committing to the dive. After a conversation with Er Ma, you will receive the task to dive into the Yellow River depths and find the sunken seal.

  1. Grab the surface chest on the right wooden platform near the water entry.
  2. Next, dive underwater and the oxygen timer will start.
  3. While swimming forward through the flooded tunnel of the sunken ship structure, open Chest 1 on the floor to collect Jade Fish and Enlightenment.
  4. Drop through the opening in the cabin floor to the lower deck to loot Chest 2.
  5. Turn around, swim outward through the fractured wooden hull into the deep trench, and toward the quest marker.

Interact with the marker at the wreckage “Call Er’ma’s ‘Old Friend‘” for a short cutscene. After that, your oxygen gauge will no longer deplete. Open Chest 3 on the seabed right beside the marker to get the Zhu Yu – Red Sleeve Armor. Swim up through the open water gate back to the raft inside the Gonggong Crane Base.

Activate the Crane and Go to Its Upper Level

Surface back at Er Ma’s raft. Approach the central column and interact with the lock to insert the Nuo Dance Mask Key to activate the crane mechanism. Climb the ladder on the left to reach the second floor. Defeat the four guards in the room. Pull them away from the open ladder trapdoor so they won’t drop below or bug out.

Go to crane's top 1 - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

Jump over the stacked wooden crates opposite the entry stairs. Wait for one of the rotating wooden arms on the central pillar to swing near, then jump on it. Ride the arm as it sweeps around the perimeter, then leap off onto the upper walkway by the quest marker. Go to the outer balcony to loot another gear chest, but kill a lurking enemy first.

Go to crane's top 2 - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

Then circle around to the opposite side and climb the ladder on the exterior balcony. Squeeze past the crane framework to take out a lone sentry. Look up to target the glowing Shadow Step grapple points. Grapple to the overhead beam, scramble over the supply crates, and climb the final ladders along the crane boom to reach the top operating deck.

Hoist the Imperial Jade Seal

Stand at the Crane Helm atop the highest gantry and interact with the steering wheel. The camera will zoom out to an overhead perspective:

  1. Rotate the crane outward toward the river.
  2. Lower the winch cable until the crane hook submerges inside the highlighted circle area in the Yellow River.
  3. Press the action button to lock onto the sunken cargo.

In the following cutscene, the hook will haul the Imperial Jade Seal chain to the surface. The cable will snap under immense strain, and the gargantuan Colossus Dragon King will appear from the water, ridden by the River Master.

Defeat the Dragon King & River Master

The showdown against the boss is the climax of the Heavenfall quest and unlocks the repeatable Campaign challenge. Expect plenty of powerful water moves, charged projectiles, and unblockable strikes—and keep your guard up for a second phase that levels up the speed and pressure, so make sure your reflexes are sharp.

Phase 1: Dragon King (Colossus Catfish)

Dragon king phase 1 fight - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

The first phase pits you against the giant aquatic beast while the River Master commands it from above its skull.

  • Charged Water Cannon: The fish charges energy and shoots a dense water ball across the deck. Time your parry/deflect right as it arrives; this reflects the projectile back to the boss, staggering it and exposing its head to melee attacks.
  • Sweeping Water Waves: When it sweeps the platform with tidal surges, double jump or use light aerial maneuvers to stay airborne.
  • Golden Leap Slam: The catfish leaps into the storm clouds and dives onto the deck. The descent happens very fast, so preemptively dodge the moment his animation leaves the ground.
Damage Window: Strike the head and whiskers whenever it rests on the platform after attacks.

Phase 2: River Master (Feng Yi)

River master phase 2 fight - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall Campaign

After depleting the beast’s health, Feng Yi drops down to fight on foot.

  • Triple Water Beam into Dive Slam: Feng Yi fires three sweeping water slashes with his weapon, then instantly launches airborne to slam down on you. Perform two consecutive dodges sideways, then roll forward through the slam.
  • Melee Flurries: River Master chases you down with fast combos that track your movement well. Keep your guard raised and focus on the boss’s patterned deflections. Watch for the red-glint flash at the end of his five-hit combo. If you deflect this hit, his Qi bar shatters, and you get an open shot to execute counterattacks.
  • Spacing: Strategic Sword users should stay in mid-range, baiting his leaping attacks to punish recoveries instead of overcommitting to long combos.

Speak with Jin Zhongyuan and Feng Yi

Speak with Jin Zhongyuan and Feng Yi - Where Winds Meet Heavenfall

Once the River Master is defeated, an ending cutscene will reveal his identity as Feng Yi, an old comrade of Er Ma and Jin Zhongyuan. Once the scene concludes, talk to Jin Zhongyuan to resolve the plotline, complete the Heavenfall Campaign, and collect the rewards.

Post-Quest Dialogue: After being teleported back to the non-quest version of Heavenfall Crossing, turn around to find Feng Yi on the deck near a chest. Exhaust his optional dialogue to reveal backstory about Chief Zhu and the Khitan conflict.

Heavenfall Campaign Rewards

  • Medicinal Tales x1
  • Oscillating Jade x5
  • Echo Jade x60
  • Kaifeng Exploration Points x110
  • Enlightenment Points x100
  • Character EXP x50,000
  • Coin x50,000

Completing this campaign permanently unlocks Feng Ruzhi as a farmable World Boss and unlocks the repeatable River Master Campaign Challenge via the Campaign Menu for solo or online multiplayer.
