You’ll run into Wen Gao (a Jianghu Friend) while he’s busy trying to swipe a cart of treasure from Qinghe’s young master, but don’t draw your sword just yet. By using the game’s dynamic AI chat system to talk your way through the situation, you can increase your affinity with him to Old Friend (Revered) status. - Area: Encircling Lake (Lake’s Embrace)
Wen Gao can be found in the Qinghe region along the lakeside ridge south of Encircling Lake near Moonveil Mountain. He stands next to a wooden treasure wagon parked beside a lone tree on the cliffside.
Time of Day Check: If Wen Gao is sleeping or won’t initiate dialogue, advance the game clock to daylight hours. Like many Jianghu NPCs, he rests in night and will only talk when there’s sunlight.
How to Befriend Wen Gao in AI Chat in Where Winds Meet
Wen Gao is an arrogant character and always fishes for compliments and respect. The mission objective in the chat interface states that Wen Gao wants to haul a wagon of stolen chests off to Kaifeng, and you must stop him.
Because the AI processes open text prompts, you can succeed using two completely different conversational tactics: stroke his massive ego or call his bluff with intimidation. Both will trigger the final resolution prompt where “Wen Gao looks reluctant… after all, he insists those chests were his find.” Once that line appears, his relationship status will change to Revered.
Approach 1: Flattery & Admiration (Fastest)
Wen Gao is deeply vain and craves validation. Feeding his self-importance completely bypasses the conflict in only two or three messages.
Example Conversation:
Player: I admire you as a master.
Wen Gao: (grinning broadly, nodding vigorously) He’ll boast about his wisdom and ask what else you have to say to show respect.
Player: “I swear my loyalty to you, great treasure hunter,” or “your fighting skills and swordsmanship are legendary in Jianghu.”
Wen Gao: (laughing, clearly pleased) He will accept the praise, feeling satisfied with his supposed greatness, which triggers the resolution text and completes the encounter.
Approach 2: Intimidation & Blade Threat
If you prefer a confrontation that fits the story, you can threaten him with the authorities or call out his reckless greed. Pushing him until he realizes he’s backed into a corner also completes the objective.
Example Conversation:
Player: Those chests belong to Qinghe’s young master. Taking them isn’t a fortune—it’s a death sentence.
Wen Gao: He will try to deflect, boasting that guards don’t frighten him and demanding you show respect instead.
Player: I admire your stupidity. You’re stealing from the most powerful family in the region and bragging out loud. How long do you think you’ll last?
- (Alternative prompt): (points to the wagon) Look! He’s right here trying to escape with the goods! Guards, arrest him!
Wen Gao: (fists clenched, voice sharp) He snaps defensively about your disrespect, backs down, and the script unlocks the Old Friend.
Troubleshoot AI Chat Issues
- NPC Turns Hostile: If the conversation fails and combat starts, immediately open the main menu and log out to the title screen. Logging back in resets the NPC peacefully to his starting position without risking an accidental kill.
- Stuck Dialogue Loop: If Wen Gao gets stuck repeating dialogue loops or refuses to budge after several turns, click the Refresh/Reset icon at the top of the AI Chat box to wipe the log and start a fresh conversation with a fresh approach.
- Check the Hint Line: Check the small hint bar at the bottom of the dialogue window to see the exact win condition or objective for that interaction. The chat will only conclude when the bottom system text reads that Wen Gao looks reluctant about the chests. If you see this text, close the chat interface to collect your reward banner.
