How to Bow in Where Winds Meet

When the game wants respect and you wonder how to kneel.

You’ll bow on many occasions in Where Winds Meet since shrine puzzles, ritual sequences, and a host of exploration quests all rely on that single gesture. The game treats it as a given, yet the menus never mention it, and there’s no bow option in the emote wheel. So when you find yourself standing still before a statue, unsure how to proceed, remember that the bow is bound to the standard interaction command. Here’s how the bow system works in Where Winds Meet.

Where Winds Meet Bow System Explained

Bowing is not an emote, and the game only allows you to bow in particular spots during puzzles or story quests. When an area requires a bow, you will always find a grass mat in front of the object you’re meant to interact with. The mat is a thin, rectangular woven pad placed on the ground. These are known as Liangxi ritual mats, used for kneeling or kowtowing in traditional China.

To use a bow, walk onto the mat until the white colored Bow prompt appears. Press F on PC, R2 on controllers, and your character will drop into the ritual bow animation. A short progress bar will fill as the action completes.

Some puzzles only need one bow, but others can require multiple of them. During the Echoes in the Shrine puzzle, you need to bow three times in front of the statue to cause it to shift aside and reveal the hidden path. Almost every shrine or spiritual puzzle uses this bow system. You’ll see it around ancient tablets, temple offerings, statues with hidden switches, and many story-driven ritual sites scattered across the regions.

Bow Ritual vs. Bow Weapon

Bowing in the ritual sense is not the same thing as drawing the bow weapon. On a controller, the game switches to a dedicated stance:

  • On controllers: Press L2 + R2 together, stay in that pose, then hold L2 and tap R2 to let the arrow fly
  • On mouse/keyboard: Draw and fire work more traditionally and react much faster.

Because the two systems are named the same, it’s easy to assume the ritual bow hides behind the weapon mechanic. It doesn’t—the bow weapon and the ritual bow in Where Winds Meet operate independently.
