Mortal Shell II is a dark-fantasy action RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. Building on the 2020 cult hit, the sequel trades linear zones for a compact, interconnected open world containing over 60 dungeons. The game removes the traditional stamina bar to make combat faster and more aggressive while keeping the franchise's signature Harden mechanic, posture breaks, and execution strikes.
What is Mortal Shell II about?
You play as the Harbinger, a mysterious prophesied being tasked with reclaiming the Ova of the Undermether from the creatures and zealots guarding it. Instead of playing as a conventional hero with a single fixed class, you find the remains of fallen warriors and possess their bodies, called Shells. Each Shell has its own strengths, abilities, and memories that function as a different combat build.
The world is a jagged, dark-fantasy landscape of ruined temples, overgrown forests, icy graves, and bone-built citadels linked by narrow, winding paths. The map is dense. It avoids the long, empty stretches that clog most open world games. Instead, the geography forces consistent discovery. You journey through these zones to find Shells, new weapons, and hidden paths. Every corner hides an optional dungeon or a stray upgrade. There is no filler here, just a tight, deliberate path through a dead kingdom.
Combat is the Biggest Change
The game removes the traditional stamina bar to make combat faster and more aggressive while keeping the franchise's signature Harden mechanic, posture breaks, and execution strikes.
This gives the sequel a faster, more aggressive feel. You can change the way you approach encounters by switching Shells, weapons, and abilities instead of just increasing a character's stats. Weapon customization is way deeper now with melee options, ranged options/sidearms, and extensive upgrade paths.
The Shell System
Shells are the game's answer to traditional character classes. The sequel has eight playable Shells, each a different warrior with its own identity, skills, and preferred play style. You find their bodies in the world, possess them, and reveal their stories through memories.
This system is one of the game's strongest unique features because Shell changes can massively impact combat. A more durable Shell can encourage direct melee combat, while another may reward mobility, critical hits, special abilities, or more unusual tactics.
World and Exploration
The world is best described as a compact, interconnected space, not an open-world slog. It features over 60 dungeons. You will find hidden paths and optional areas branching off the main route. The developer wants players to step away from the golden path, and if you do, you'll find extra Shells, weapons, upgrades, and other discoveries. Exploration is the point of the game.
Cold Symmetry took the core idea of inhabiting dead warriors and built a massive Souls-like RPG around it.
