How to Get More Activation Charges in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Don't play like a vampire on a drained battery! Here's how to unlock extra charges.

Combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker gets a lot better as you level up and dig into your skill trees. Since your Activation Charges determine which moves you can use and when, you have to manage them well if you want to win.

Activation Charges govern Coen’s best Active Abilities and are the primary currency across Swordsman, Witchcraft, and Vampirism trees. If you run out of them in the middle of a fight, you won’t be able to use your strongest moves. Expanding your Activation Charge meter and speeding up mid-battle regeneration requires specific skill nodes, targeted gear, and potions. Here’s how to manage and increase your Activation Charges in The Blood of Dawnwalker, including the best skills, gear, and combat tips to keep you fighting longer.

How to Increase Your Activation Charge Cap in The Blood of Dawnwalker

To get more Activation Charges, you need to unlock and rank up the Sustained Focus skill in the Swordmastery tree, while attacks, blocks, perks, gear, and consumables help you refill charges fast. Since these Swordmastery upgrades are available to Coen day and night, you can enjoy the benefits regardless of the time.

The skill has four ranks. Each one either levels up your Activation Charge cap or grants you a charge at the start of a fight.

Rank Benefit Upgrade Cost Time Required
Rank 1 Increases maximum capacity to 2 Activation Charges 1 Skill Point 1 Hour / 1 Segment
Rank 2 Start every combat encounter with 1 full Activation Charge 1 Skill Point 1 Hour / 1 Segment
Rank 3 Increases maximum capacity to 3 Activation Charges 1 Skill Point 1 Hour / 1 Segment
Rank 4 Increases maximum capacity to 4 Activation Charges 2 Skill Points 1 Hour / 1 Segment

Every upgrade takes one hour of in-game time to learn. Rank 2 is particularly useful because the extra charge is available immediately when a fight begins, while Ranks 1, 3, and 4 increase the amount you can store.

How to Refill Activation Charges During Combat

Regular combat actions are the primary source to recover Activation Charges. You get more charge regen by landing basic melee attacks or holding your guard. To fill your meter fast, focus on precision:

  • Directional and Last-Second Parries: Execute a precise Perfect Block to restore more bar than a standard block.
  • Combos: Attack enemies consistently without taking damage to keep active restoration high.

This creates a loop where you attack to get more charges, defend accurately when an enemy attacks, and then spend what you earned on Active Abilities. Activation Charges can also recover passively over time, and many bonuses can improve that rate.

Recommended Skills for Activation Charge Restoration

Key perks and active skills reduce ability costs or refund charges outright during battle:

  • Renewed Focus & Fleet of Foot (Rank 2) [Swordmastery]: Increase overall Activation Charge restoration rates and reward last-second dodges with extra energy.
  • Walking Fortress [Swordmastery]: Passively restores energy whenever you perform a Perfect Block.
  • Tactical Mastery [Swordmastery]: Shaves 1 point off the Activation Charge cost for all abilities.
  • Charge & Death from Above [Level 4 Focus]: Refunds Activation Charges after a kill.
  • Unholy Fervour [Witchcraft]: Offers a flat chance to refund an Activation Charge after casting a Witchcraft spell.
  • Wild Blood [Vampirism]: Drinking animal blood applies a passive charge restoration buff lasting 3 Time Segments.
  • Mesmerise [Vampirism]: Converts damage dealt by mind-controlled enemies into charge meter gains.

Best Gear and Accessories for Activation Charges

Gear stat bonuses cap out individually at 15%. Prioritize these accessories to maximize passive and active benefits:

  • Ring of Focus: Improves recovery by 15% from attacks, blocks, and Perfect Blocks.
  • Mindbrace Amulet: Gives 15% gains to basic combat actions alongside an 8% increase to active ability restoration.
  • Astrologer’s Ring & Relic of St. Dasius: Combine 8% active regen with 15% passive recovery. The Relic is particularly effective for powerful Witchcraft builds.
  • Ancient Hero’s Vambraces & Vrakhiric Bracers: Arm armor pieces that mainly increase charge gain from Perfect Blocks.
  • Arbiter’s Ring & Corrupted Ring: Reduce the base cost of Vampiric skills by 8%.

Consumables for Temporary Charge Boosts

Human-form daytime combat gets a lot of advantages from the Powder of Sharp Mind potions, which accelerate Activation Charge restoration rates.

Consumable Restoration Bonus
Minor Powder of Sharp Mind +10%
Powder of Sharp Mind +15%
Potent Powder of Sharp Mind +20%

Buy the Potent version from the witchcraft vendor in the Middens or from the Sanzhani jeweller. Keep these for tough battles during the day when you plan to use Active Abilities often, instead of burning them for routine tasks.
