Should You Use, Give, or Destroy the Font of Life in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Choose wisely, because one pedestal can hide a legendary secret.

Deciding the fate of the Font of Life marks the climax of Anca’s questline in The Blood of Dawnwalker. You can drink it as Coen, let Anca have it, or destroy it. Each option has a different payoff, and only two of them give you anything tangible. After trekking through the Convent, concluding the Where Old Devils Lie, and surviving the trials in Stronger Than Achilles, you finally stand before the ancient pool. Now you face the final call on who gets the Font’s power, or if anyone should have it at all.

Who Should Use the Font of Life in Blood of Dawnwalker?

Dialogue prompts to choose to use, give, or destroy Font of Life in Blood of Dawnwalker

The game gives you three dialogue options:

  • “If it’s alright with you – I’ll use it.“
  • “Go ahead. Make what you will with it.“
  • “We should just destroy it.“

You can ask Anca what she thinks first, but the decision is yours. Here’s what happens with each choice, what rewards you get, and how it impacts your relationship with Anca.

Coen Uses the Font of Life

If you pick the “If it’s alright with you – I’ll use it.” dialogue option, Coen will receive an exclusive passive upgrade.

  • Reward: Unlocks the Font of Life perk in the Witchcraft skill tree.
  • Perk Effect: Grants passive regeneration of Human Health during the day to keep the stamina bar topped.
  • Story Impact: Coen will cleanse his mind of his past failures. Anca will feel relieved that the temptation is removed, even though she’s a bit torn about it. Taking the Font for yourself won’t ruin your relationship with her, and you can still romance Anca back at the shelter.

Font of Life perk in The Blood of Dawnwalker

This health regen perk is of great help for human Coen in the early-to-mid game, as it saves you a lot of food and brewed medicine you burn through between fights. Just keep in mind that Font of Life only works during sunlight hours, so you won’t get any benefits once Coen becomes a vampire at night. Furthermore, if you play around late-game Witchcraft perks like Unholy Vitality, Soul Reaping, Frugal Witchcraft, or Soul Stigma, you’ll already have more than enough health sustain in human form that will then make this passive somewhat useless.

Let Anca Use the Font of Life

Giving the Font of Life to Anca will let her wash and purge her connection to the dark arts. So she will drink from the basin to cleanse herself.

  • Reward: None for Coen
  • Story Impact: The runic carvings etched into Anca’s flesh will be removed, and she will feel rejuvenated. She can finally let go of the guilt from her Convent days and abandon witchcraft for good, ready to live a normal life.
  • Romance Check: While this choice provides an emotionally satisfying conclusion to Anca’s personal journey, it’s not necessary to romance her. You can sleep with her back at the inn under any choice. Even with this outcome, Anca will admit that they can’t have a permanent future together due to Coen’s vampiric curse.

From a min-max perspective, this is the worst option. You’ll walk away with no good benefits, extra gear, or unique vendor inventory unlocks despite her mention of selling off her magical components. Go with this only for roleplay reasons if you believe Anca deserves a fresh start.

Destroy the Font of Life

Choosing “We should just destroy it.” prompts Coen and Anca to push the Font off its pedestal, shattering it against the floor so no one can take its cursed power.

  • Reward: Ancient Greaves (Legendary Leg Armor).
  • Story Impact: Both will be reluctant, but they agree it was the right call given what the Font is. Destroying a demonic relic born of human slaughter is what should be done. Sifting through the debris under the pedestal reveals a hidden bag containing the greaves, a Legendary pair of heavy trousers that you can’t get anywhere else.
  • Romance Check: Anca will remain on great terms with Coen, and the romance scene will be available back at the inn.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Ancient Greaves

Ancient Greaves scale with your current level, making them a solid gear piece regardless of when you pick them. For a hybrid build that likes to combo melee with spells, these pants are a great thing to have under the hood:

  • High Base Armor Rating
  • Bonus Witchcraft Ability Damage
  • Increased Passive Activation Charge Restoration
  • Bonus Activation Charge Restoration on Block
  • Magic Damage Reduction

Which Choice Should You Pick?

I’d recommend destroying the Font of Life. The Ancient Greaves offer great offensive and defensive buffs for Witchcraft builds, and since Coen can have near-infinite sustain later in the game thanks to spells like Soul Reaping, giving up the regen perk for a piece of Legendary armor is a smart trade. That said, if you’re having a hard time with the early game quests and find yourself burning through all your healing items, you can let Coen drink Font of Life for a nice quality-of-life sustain.
