Defeating Ambrus in The Blood of Dawnwalker is one of your first major hurdles against Brencis’s Boyars, and the game gives you a sneaky shortcut: poison his drink before blade ever meets armor during The Gilded Gauntlet quest. The short answer is yes, you should poison Ambrus. It turns a grueling boss fight into a walk in the park, and the minor side effect you suffer afterward is completely trivial to fix. Here’s how to poison Ambrus, what happens to your health bar, and why the trade-off is totally worth it.
How to Poison Ambrus in The Blood of Dawnwalker
To force poison into Ambrus’s bones, you need to complete the side quest The Bittersweet Toast before the boss fight in Maragir. However, you cannot apply poison to him directly, so you need a workaround. Thankfully, someone will make a sacrifice to help you.

- Max out Ambrus’s Anger Level: Keep clearing his Court quests until his threat (Anger Level) meter reaches maximum. This triggers The Gilded Gauntlet, telling you to head to Maragir.
- Talk to Iulian Codrin: Outside the arena, speak with Ambrus’s vassal Iulian, and he will offer a desperate plan. He knows Ambrus feeds on him before battle, so he proposes turning himself into a living vessel of poison.
- Complete The Bittersweet Toast side quest: Follow Iulian’s request to find his dead alchemist contact, Vera. Use Focus Mode to find and take her ritual notes, wait until daytime, and ignite the pillars with Astral Communion. Defeat the Fallen Witch and her undead horde, then force-feed Iulian the toxic brew.
- Arrive at the Duel on Time: Meet Ambrus at night. During the opening dialogue, Ambrus will offer you a drink from Iulian first. Decline the offer with “I don’t trust anything you offer,” which will cause Ambrus to drink from Iulian, unknowingly swallowing the lethal concoction.

Note: Whether you use the Tatzelwurm Gland or not in the ritual doesn’t change Ambrus’s fate—it only affects Iulian’s last moments. As long as Iulian downs the poison and gets fed on, the trap will spring flawlessly.
What Happens If You Poison Ambrus, and Should You Do It?

Once the fight begins, Ambrus will take immediate tick damage. His health bar will glow green and steadily bleed away throughout combat, even when his heavy posture shield is active. On higher difficulty settings, this completely shifts the tempo, letting you play defensively with parries and dodges while the poison chips away at his health.
Tip: Ambrus is immune to your Vampire Bite ability, so don’t waste stamina trying to feed mid-combat. Stick to directional blocks, weapon arts, and heavy charge attacks to stagger him whenever the poison forces him to stumble.
If you choose to drink Vrakhir’s blood after beating him down, that same poison will transfer into Coen, and you’ll have to deal with a health-draining debuff for up to 10 Time Segments in Vale Sangora.
Don’t let that intimidate you:
- How to cure poison: Visit any nearby Shrine to rest and advance time, allocate skill points, or simply pass the remaining time segments until the next morning phase. Once the sun is set, the poison debuff will completely clear from Coen’s body.
- Why you must drain him anyway: Draining Ambrus’s blood unlocks Scarlet Shield, one of the best Vampirism passive skills in the game, which heals you whenever you execute a Perfect Block. In the post-fight scene, you get another choice to invite Ambrus in or refuse him at Anachora to recruit his mind as a guide against Brencis.
Taking a minor rest penalty at a Shrine is a small price to pay for crippling a Boyar boss and securing an S-tier vampiric ability. Pair these rewards with his dropped loot, including the Level 21 Epic Shortsword Song of Valour and the Legendary chestpiece Ambrus’ Cuirass, and you’ll walk away from Maragir highly overpowered.
Other than this, you have another choice to either destroy the barrels or collect the blood in Ambrus’s blood cellars, and what you decide depends on whether you want to maximize your resource gains in Blood of Dawnwalker.
