Fortnite

Developed by Epic Games, Fortnite is an ever evolving, free-to-play online multiplayer game that blends fast-paced combat with dynamic building mechanics. While best known for its 100-player Battle Royale mode, where players fight to be the last survivor on a shrinking island, Fortnite extends into a sprawling ecosystem of experiences. Players can explore user created worlds in Fortnite Creative, team up against husks in Save the World, or enjoy games like LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. Frequent seasonal updates, live events, and major pop-culture crossovers keep the world fresh, competitive, and constantly moving.

Overview

Fortnite is not a conventional single-player game with a fixed campaign and ending. It is a continually evolving online games and entertainment platform operated by Epic Games. Its best known experience is Battle Royale, where up to 100 players compete to survive, loot, fight, and secure a Victory Royale. Players can choose traditional building-based Battle Royale or Zero Build, which removes construction from the combat.

The Fortnite ecosystem now extends far beyond Battle Royale. Fortnite OG revisits earlier Battle Royale gameplay, Reload provides a more compact fight format, and Epic-developed experiences include LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, Rocket Racing, and Save the World. Fortnite also has a huge creator ecosystem where players can discover and play creator made islands spanning racing, parkour, survival, tycoons, horror, social games, and many other genres.

Save the World is Fortnite's cooperative PvE campaign, where players build defenses, craft weapons, collect loot, level Heroes, and fight monster hordes. For now, Epic has made Save the World free-to-play, removing the purchase restriction.

Fortnite's main traits are constantly refreshed content and multiplatform reach plus solid social perks. Seasonal live events, cosmetic upgrades, and creator tools round out the mix, and Epic calls Fortnite a broad hub of social fun instead of just one mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fortnite free to play?

Yes! Fortnite's core modes—Battle Royale, Zero Build, Creative, LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival—are completely free to download and play. Optional cosmetics and the seasonal Battle Pass can be purchased with in-game V-Bucks.

What is the difference between Battle Royale and Zero Build?

Battle Royale includes Fortnite's signature building mechanics, allowing players to collect wood, stone, and metal to construct walls, ramps, and forts during combat. Zero Build removes all building mechanics and focus only on gunplay, movement mechanics, and tactical cover.

Is Fortnite cross-platform?

Yes, Fortnite features full cross-platform play and cross-progression across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and cloud services (via Epic Games Account linking).

Can I run Fortnite on Steam or Steam Deck?

Fortnite is not available on Steam. On PC, it is exclusive to the Epic Games Store. You can play Fortnite on a Steam Deck by installing Windows on the device or by streaming it via Xbox Cloud Gaming / GeForce NOW.

How do V-Bucks work, and do they transfer between platforms?

V-Bucks are Fortnite’s in-game currency used to buy cosmetics and Battle Passes. Shared Wallet support allows purchased and earned V-Bucks to transfer across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Android, and Cloud platforms (Nintendo Switch holds purchased V-Bucks on its own platform balance).

Can you play Save the World on every Fortnite platform?

No. Save the World is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2, but not on the original Nintendo Switch, smartphones or tablets.

Can Fortnite run on low-end PCs?

Yes, at reduced settings, provided the PC meets Epic's minimum requirements. Epic designed the game to operate across a broad range of PC hardware. Performance varies a lot according to hardware and graphics settings.

Can Fortnite run on Linux or macOS through unofficial methods?

Epic doesn't back non-native setups like Linux or Windows through Parallels on Mac. The company recommends supported cloud streaming alternatives where applicable.
