In Baldur’s Gate 3, few things capture players’ attention more than a mysterious item with an equally mysterious name. And when that item appears right in the middle of a major quest, like “Find the Blood of Lathander“, curiosity is bound to spike. That’s exactly the case with the Strange Chunk of Amber in BG3, a small object tucked away inside the Githyanki stronghold in Rosymorn Monastery. It is glowing orange, has blood drops inside it, and is locked in a display case.
But what actually is this Strange Chunk of Amber? Is it part of a legendary weapon quest, a hidden crafting ingredient, or only a distraction meant to toy with your expectations? This guide explains everything about the Strange Chunk of Amber in Baldur’s Gate 3, its location, and what (if anything) you should do with it.

Where to Find the Strange Chunk of Amber in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The Strange Chunk of Amber can be found in Creche Y’llek, the Githyanki base beneath Rosymorn Monastery. This is an important location linked to both Lae’zel’s storyline and the “Find the Blood of Lathander” quest.
To get there, you’ll need to get through the Mountain Pass area during Act 1. Once inside the monastery, head toward the Inquisitor’s Room, the same location you’ll be led to during your dealings with Kith’rak Therezzyn, who will question you about the artifact you’re carrying.
If you cooperate with Therezzyn and let her examine the artifact, she’ll allow you to enter the Inquisitor’s room. If not, you may have to fight or stealth the Strange Chunk of Amber your way through. Either way, once inside, turn left to find a Display Case placed in a side room right in front of a pair of facing statues. Inside the case is the Strange Chunk of Amber and a pair of Hoarfrost Boots.
How to Use the Strange Chunk of Amber in BG3
Despite its elegant appearance and suggestive name, the Strange Chunk of Amber is fake, not the real Blood of Lathander, nor is it a crafting item, nor does it unlock anything. It’s a decoy added to BG3 to throw adventurers off the trail.
When you obtain it, a DC 14 Religion check will trigger (if your character isn’t an Origin). When passed, you’ll get a comment about the item being underwhelming or suspicious. Origin characters like Shadowheart, Astarion, or Gale all throw shade at it in their snarky way, reflecting this sense of letdown.
Despite the reactions, the Strange Chunk of Amber is not the actual Blood of Lathander, though many players get confused with it. The item description teases its mystery: “This chunk of amber has three drops of blood suspended in it.” Picking it up will update your quest log with an entry confirming that this amber relic is a fake artifact meant to mislead intruders:
A fake artifact in Rosymorn Monastery was disguised as the Blood of Lathander – we should keep looking for the true relic.
Some in-game dialogue and lore bits mention that the Monastery was built to keep the real relic secret, and the amber chunk may have been displayed to throw people off. That would explain why it’s in such an obvious place, while the actual Blood of Lathander requires solving puzzles and dodging traps to reach.
While the Strange Chunk of Amber has no direct use, its presence is a big clue, as it marks the exact location where you’ll find the statue puzzle that leads to the real Blood of Lathander. Right near the Display Case are two stone statues facing each other; this is the actual puzzle room. Solve this puzzle to unlock the hidden passage to the real relic. If one of the statues gets stuck when completing the challenge, cast Grease or a powerful spell on it to reset its movement.
One Reddit user shared an interesting theory that suggests this chunk probably doesn’t have any connection to Lathander but rather to Bhaal, the god of murder. According to the Forgotten Realms narration, Bhaal was once trapped in a large armor piece by the avatar of Azuth (Midnight). The three drops of blood inside the BG3 amber chunk might be a solid hint at the event or even a remnant from it.
While the theory is far from confirmed, it fits right into BG3’s in-depth story, considering that Bhaal relics appear elsewhere in the game. Whether it’s a deliberate Easter egg or a coincidence is still up for debate.
Can You Sell the BG3 Strange Chunk of Amber?
Yes, and that’s all it’s good for in terms of gameplay. It’s classified as a miscellaneous item with no combat or story function, and you can sell it to any merchant for 55 gold, though you may get more or less based on your Charisma and bartering skills. You could also keep it as a memento of your misadventure in the Crèche if you like to collect oddities. But don’t feel bad tossing it in a vendor’s inventory when you have to clean up your pack or need money.
