Oblivion Remastered: Where to Get Magetallow Candles Box

Here's how to unlock the enchanting and spellmaking powers of Frostcrag Spire by finding the Magetallow Candles.

You will need Magetallow Candles in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered to unlock the full magical potential of Frostcrag Spire. Without these candles, the enchanting and spellmaking altars are nothing more than a piece of decoration with no actual use. In this guide, we’ll tell you about the Magetallow Candles Box location in Cyrodiil in Oblivion Remastered, how to buy them, and how to use them at the Mage’s Tower.

Where to Find the Magetallow Candles in Oblivion Remastered

Frostcrag Spire location in Oblivion Remastered

After reaching the Frostcrag Spire, a towering mage’s retreat nestled in the Jerall Mountains east of Bruma, you’ll have to start the Frostcrag Spire quest to upgrade the place which is triggered by getting the book from the Frostcrag Spire’s entrance. The main among those upgrades are the Magetallow Candles, which are required to activate two powerful magical altars.

Market District of the Imperial City map location in Oblivion Remastered

To get the candles, head to the Mystic Emporium, a quaint magic shop located in the Market District of the Imperial City. You’ll find it on the western side of the district towards the northwest corner, and if the “Frostcrag Spire” quest is the current active quest in your journal, it will pin a helpful marker on your map, pointing you right to the shop.

Aurelinwae in Oblivion Remastered

Once inside, look for the vendor Aurelinwae (not to be confused with any similarly named NPCs); she’s the high elf merchant behind the counter. Talk to her and open up the Barter menu in the lower-left of the interface. Scroll through her stock and you’ll find the Magetallow Candle Box available for sale.

Buying Magetallow Candles Box in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

There are two boxes in total, and you’ll want to grab both if you plan to use both the Altar of Enchanting and the Altar of Spellmaking at your tower. Each one will cost you somewhere between 2,000 to 3300 Gold, depending on your Mercantile skill and any bartering buffs. Keep in mind that you’ll only get one chance to place each box, so be deliberate.

How to Use the Magetallow Candles in Oblivion Remastered

Using the Magetallow Candles to activate Alter of Enchanting in Oblivion Remastered

After securing the boxes, fast travel (or ride) back to Frostcrag Spire. Head inside and climb to the top platform of the main atrium from the left. You can see two altars one on the left and the second on the right, which require Magetallow Candles for activation:

  • Altar of Enchanting: Allows you to imbue weapons with magical effects using Soul Gems.
  • Altar of Spellmaking: Lets you create or modify spells with customized effects, durations, and magnitudes.

To activate an altar, simply interact with it while holding the corresponding Magetallow Candle Box in your inventory. Once placed, the candles will be removed from your inventory as the message appears on the top left, and the altar will become permanently usable.

Tip: You can’t remove or reposition the candles once they’re placed. If you only buy one box, choose wisely. Do you want to enchant your sword or invent your fireball spell? Unless you’ve got a recent save to roll back to, the decision is final.

How to Get to Frostcrag Spire

In the Remastered version of Oblivion, the Frostcrag Spire quest starts automatically when you approach the tower. Just walk up to the entrance, and you’ll find a book on the ground nearby that kicks off the associated upgrade quest. This quest helps by not only guiding you to the right places (like the Mystic Emporium) but also unlocking fast travel and essential tower functionality.

If you’re playing the original Oblivion, make sure the Wizard’s Tower DLC is installed. Without it, Frostcrag Spire doesn’t exist, and neither do the candles. Most modern versions of the game (like GOTY editions or digital copies on Steam/GOG) include this DLC by default.

When you are at Frostcrag Spire, these are the other upgrades you can unlock here:

  • Alchemy Lab – Grants +15 Fortify Alchemy when nearby, great for potion brewers.
  • Living Area – Includes a bed and storage.
  • Library – Comes stocked with books and reading nooks.
  • Vault – A secured room filled with containers and guarded by friendly imps.
  • Garden – Grows rare plants like Nirnroot and Lichor.

But none of it reaches its magical peak until you place the Magetallow Candles. So they’re a necessity for the best part of the tower in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
