Phantom Blade Zero Sanguine Weapon Guide

Never ditch Soul’s starting gear!

The Sanguine is a One-Handed weapon available from the start in Phantom Blade Zero. Most action RPGs teach you that starting gear belongs in the trash by chapter two. In PBZ, ditching the base Sanguine sword is a rookie blunder. Soul’s signature crimson blade is not a disposable tutorial prop; it’s a finely tuned hybrid weapon with low-profile hitboxes, easy Sha-Chi cancel windows, and the ability to upgrade into one of the powerful boss-melting weapons in the game.

How to Get Sanguine

Sanguine is the default weapon Soul equips in his main hand at the start of Chapter 1. You can view its base stats and weapon skills in-game from the Character Menu.

Sanguine Weapon Overview

  • Weapon Type: Main Weapon
  • Subtype: One-Handed Blade
  • Starting Damage: 200
  • Starting Guard Break: 100
  • Innate Trait: Blood-red edge balanced between sword agility and heavy blade impact

Sanguine splits the difference between a traditional agile one-handed sword and a heavy cleaver. It lacks the fast, blinding speed of dual daggers and the screen-wide sweep of heavy glaives, but it compensates with zero recovery lag on light strings and high-level guard pressure on every swing. Sanguine’s swings recover fast enough to let you block or parry on reaction even if you misread an opponent’s hyper-armor window. You can keep pressure on humanoid bosses without overcommitting your stamina or Sha-Chi reserves.

Sanguine Weapon Moveset and Mechanics

Phantom Blade Zero Sanguine Weapon

Standard Combo

  • Input: Light Attack ×5 (◻ ◻ ◻ ◻ ◻)
  • Execution: A five-hit sequence of diagonal slashes that finishes with low-sweeping cuts. The fourth and fifth strikes drop Soul’s hurtbox lower to the ground, which naturally ducks under high horizontal swings from giant enemies and spear wielders without burning stamina on a dodge.

Timing a standard combo during an enemy’s windup mostly scores you a clean counterstrike while their attack sails harmlessly over your hat.

Sha-Chi Combo

  • Input: Heavy Attack x3 (△ △ △)
  • Execution: A three-hit move to break posture. You can cancel into the Sha-Chi combo after any trade of the Sanguine’s standard combo. With enough Sha-Chi under your Soul’s belt, these moves convert into reinforced crimson strikes that deliver massive damage multipliers and Guard Break.

If you see an elite enemy turtling behind a block, throw two light cuts to bait their guard, then immediately perform the Sha-Chi combo to shatter their posture.

Power Surge: Sweeping Blade

  • Input: L2/Q (Power Surge button)
  • Cost: Consumes 1 Sha-Chi Essence (Remnant Spark)
  • Execution: Soul unleashes an unblockable multi-slash flurry. Use this to blow past defensive stances, crack shielded baddies, and deny recovery space to human duelists.

Soul Tempering: Forging Infernal Rouge

Phantom Blade Zero Infernal Rouge weapon

Standard upgrades keep Sanguine competitive, but Soul Tempering completely reworks it.

  • Evolved Weapon: Infernal Rouge
  • Required Catalyst: Bastion of Mò Mask + Remnant Dust
  • NPC & Location: Unlocked in Chapter 4 through Myst in Pengzhen (also accessible via the Forge Master at Mandate Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley).
  • Catalyst Unlock: Conquer the gauntlet combat trials at the Five Long Pillars.

Unlike standard blacksmith upgrades, Soul Tempering is permanent and irreversible. Forging Infernal Rouge permanently transforms your base Sanguine into the Bastion of Mò heirloom blade, which trades the starter sword’s combat loop for Bloodline Awakening and Bloodline Rebirth—mechanics that limit natural healing and drain Soul’s maximum health pool over time in exchange for high-octane lifesteal, big poise damage, and increased raw attack power.

Weapon swaps in Phantom Blade Zero completely refill your Sha-Chi meter after a short internal cooldown. Switching off a secondary weapon back to Sanguine gives immediate fuel for an enhanced Sha-Chi combo or an unblockable Sweeping Blade punish. After Phantom Execution, note the 15-second weapon lock debuff. If you hot-swap to a heavy two-handed weapon or dual daggers to escape bad positioning, don’t equip Phantom Execution unless you know the target will die or stagger from the blow.

If you have invested rare materials into Sanguine and later decide you want the resources back for a different weapon archetype, use a Reforge Talisman at the blacksmith. Reforging refunds 100% of your upgrade materials and resets the Sanguine weapon without losing resources.
