How to Wake Up Dairow Vin in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can wake Vin with a spell but should you? Find out everything about it.

In Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lower City Sewers in Underdark, you’ll encounter Dairow Vin, an unconscious Tiefling lying among empty Potion of Sleep bottles. Once living in Elturel, Dairow and his husband sought a better life but were separated. Dairow ended up connected to the criminal Guild while his husband met refugees and travelled with them. When the Absolute’s forces attacked, his husband and the refugees vanished, presumed dead.

After tracking down the refugees with the help of Guildmaster Nine-Fingers Keene, and overcome by the grief of his husband’s death, Dairow drank a lot of Potions of Sleep (so many empty bottles clearly tell how much he drank), falling into a serious condition in the sewers.

Piecing things together from notes and talking to Dairow using the Speak with Dead spell, it appeared that Dairow’s husband was possibly Garrett’s brother, another refugee whose corpse can be found in Rivington. Between the matching rings and the letters, it paints a heartbreakingly quiet story of loss and despair — that seems to be meant to continue but never quite does. If you took pity on this poor guy and want to wake him up, here’s everything you need to know.

Where to Find Dairow Vin in Baldur’s Gate 3

To find this unconscious Tiefling, head into the Lower City Sewers in Act 3, northwest of the City Sewers waypoint. If you’ve unlocked Flymm’s Cargo, you can even reach him from the warehouse basement. He’s easy to spot, an NPC sprawled out with empty sleep potion bottles scattered around, deep in his sleep.

Dairow Vin has the “Impenetrable Slumber” (incurable) condition, which makes it impossible to interact with him but there is a way to resurrect him. First, cast the Dominate Person. Since Dairow is flagged as hostile, this spell lets you temporarily flip him to your side. If you don’t have a caster with it, the Scroll of Dominate Person can drop throughout Act 3, so you don’t have to fully spec a Wizard or Sorcerer for this.

Once he is under your control, cast Death Ward on him. It’s a level 4 Cleric spell for which Shadowheart is the right companion to use. Death Ward prevents death once, revives the target at 1 HP instead of letting them drop. Now you need to kill him, attack Dairow until his HP reduces to zero. This would usually finish him off, but due to Death Ward, he respawns with 1 HP with his “Unconscious” status removed, and this time, Dairow Vin is awake in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What Happens After You Wake Him?

Nothing much, Dairow won’t talk to you, doesn’t start a quest, and most likely runs off if you’re not in turn-based mode. Even if he stays in case of turn-based mode and the Dominate Person spell wears off, there’s no dialogue or cutscene with him. The common consensus is that Dairow was linked to a scrapped questline involving the Thieves Guild and the refugee storylines in Act 3. Waking him is just a curiosity, kind of something like it was meant to lead somewhere, but never actually does.

Should You Wake Up Dairow Vin in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Unless you have finished Baldur’s Gate 3 many times before with different story endings but missed this optional stuff, you won’t mind to get through this game content. Though he won’t join your camp, reward you with items, and progress any quests. At best, it’s a nice “I did it” moment for players who can’t resist solving mysteries.
