Gongsun Deng is a Challenge Boss in Where Winds Meet who looks like a harmless prodigy playing around, but is the real skill check—a duel that teaches you on time parry, track teleports, and win over a ring-out arena. You can find Gongsun Deng at the General’s Shrine in the northwest of the Verdant Wilds in Qinghe. He is one of the Old, Weak, Women & Scholars challenge bosses—four duelists included as optional content to test your different combat abilities. Talk to Deng, who is sitting busy reading. Choose prompt “Fight me, and I’ll teach you to write,” and accept the challenge to start the boss fight.
Where Winds Meet Gongsun Deng Boss Fight Guide
Gongsun Deng beats your movement and reaction skills, and his offense moves have teleport pressure (fast ambushes from your blind spot) and ring-out windwhirl (mistakes near the edge instantly end the fight). Once you understand these attack moves, the duel will be under control.
Teleport Attack

Gongsun Deng mostly disappears from the arena and appears after a few seconds behind or off-angle from your back to attack. He teleports as invisible to strike from a blind spot, so you have a bare chance to counter. The ambush is easy to parry, and a successful parry chunks his good Qi bar. Two good parries almost force a full Qi break and give you some time to counterattack.
Don’t chase him or circle every time he vanishes, as you’ll lose ground control. Stand your ground, move the camera until you get maximum arena view, and carefully track his audio or movement cue. Once he spawns, single parry, but do not spam. A clean deflect creates a massive stagger, an open chance to deliver a few safe hits. If it’s hard to grasp raw timing, enable Assist Deflection in settings to practice the pattern.
Wind Burst

Gongsun Deng’s deadly move is the Wind Burst, a combo-hit with first yellow-flash strike followed by a vortex (windwhirl) that drags you in and explodes away with strong force to throw you to the ground. One hit from the blast and it’s over, even if your health is untouched.
He performs this unblockable attack when you get too close or extends combos, and creates a whirlwind around him. The pull increases the closer you are, and standing near the edge guarantees ring-out disaster. To avoid, dodge backwards in a full step, and if get clipped by the suction, dodge regularly in one direction until you get out of the wind circle AoE. Fight the boss from the arena’s center, and avoid your back anywhere near the drop.
Best Strategy to Win the Gongsun Deng Fight

You win this fight if you let Deng defeat himself through his predictable teleports. Rush never works because all his attack moves revolve around catching you when you push too hard. A good dodge into a quick strike can quickly remove a part of his Qi stamina. But parry is preferred and more consistent once practiced. This boss fight is optional to test your reaction skills early on, so if you’re not prepared and unable to defeat Gongsun Deng currently, you can come back later stronger with better gear and abilities. With Assist Deflection on, your parry window will be large, and it makes the teleport punish very forgiving.
Rewards for Defeating Gongsun Deng
Once you defeat Gongsun Deng, the Your Turf, My Time achievement unlocks, and you earn 5 Echo Jades. Same as in the Elden Gongsun fight, there’s no good reward other than achievement and martial arts practice.
