Red Dead Redemption Meets Baldur’s Gate in New Dark Survival RPG

A cursed forest, a caravan to protect, and survival at any cost.

Does it ever come to your mind what will happen if Red Dead Redemption’s dusty grit collided with Baldur’s Gate 3’s tactical depth? Steam’s new title Peregrino might be the answer, and what it seems to me from the images is a dark, strange, and very intriguing game.

On paper, Peregrino is stated as a “dark isometric survival adventure” where you trek through a cursed forest by day and manage your caravan by night. Think less “roaming open plains” and more “fighting tooth and nail to make it through another day.” You’ll hunt dangerous creatures, scavenge resources, upgrade your caravan, and keep your companions alive as you push toward a fabled refuge called New Eden.

The structure gives a sense of survival strategy games of old days spent exploring, nights spent planning, but layered with roleplaying choices and a visual element halfway between oil painting and fever dream.

Inventory management looks straight out of a CRPG, complete with gear slots and crucial survival items. It also comes with a fishing minigame, which, as any seasoned gamer will tell you, is basically a stamp of quality.

It’s not an open-world like Red Dead, but Peregrino promises plenty of side activities, from upgrading your caravan to tending your party’s needs. The thought is grim and oppressive, with a cursed-forest aesthetic kind of like The Witcher wandered into a Sergio Leone western.

I’m very curious to try it out but sadly, we don’t have a release date yet, and there’s not even a playable demo right now. However, the developers have kept things active on Steam, and a demo seems inevitable given how many smaller PC games use them to hook players early.

If Peregrino pulls off its mix of tense survival, meaningful management, and rich atmosphere, it could be a sleeper hit for cowboy and CRPG fans. Until then, make sure to add it to the wishlist and keep tracking its official release announcement.
