In Phantom Blade Zero, backing off will get you killed. Unlike traditional Soulslikes where you roll away and wait for a boss to finish its turn, S-Game’s combat system is built on relentless forward momentum. Defense actually works as offense here. You stand your ground, time deflections, and control your posture meter to break enemy guards and leave them vulnerable for executions.
Know that yellow bar right under your health meter? That’s the Sha-Chi meter, and it’s the core of your defense, which enemies have too. It plays three roles at once, working as your stamina, posture, and the resource for your combat skills:
- Holding Block: Sha-Chi drains when you passively hold guard, and absorbing enemy hits while guarding drains even more of it.
- Guard Break: If you block too many strikes and the Sha-Chi meter is depleted to zero, your guard shatters. Soul becomes staggered after that, leaving you defenseless until the meter recharges.
- Offensive Consumption: Heavy attacks, special weapon arts, and Sha-Chi combos also expend this gauge to inflict heavy posture damage on the enemy.
The golden rule is to treat your guard as an emergency crutch, not a comfort blanket. Turtling empties your meter, and you give an upper hand to the enemy.
How to Block in Phantom Blade Zero
To block in Phantom Blade Zero, press and hold L1 on PlayStation or LB on Xbox/controller.

Holding guard stops normal light attacks from hurting your health, but every blocked strike drains your Sha-Chi. You can use it to absorb sudden ranged fire or panic-mitigating quick multi-hit combos from basic grunts, but relying on a standard block against tough enemies and bosses will crack your guard within seconds.
How to Parry (Deflect) in Phantom Blade Zero
Parrying is the cornerstone of high-level play in Phantom Blade Zero. Instead of holding the button, press L1 / LB to parry right as an attack is about to make contact with your blade.

Parry outclasses block by any margin for some of these reasons:
- Zero Resource Cost: A successful parry costs no Sha-Chi.
- Negates All Damage: You take zero chip damage from standard attacks.
- Massive Posture Depletion: Parrying reverses the impact back onto the attacker, severely draining his Sha-Chi meter.
- Visual Confirmation: A perfectly timed parry triggers a sharp clash sound along with a golden spark burst.
Phantom Blade Zero lets you cancel animations with defensive inputs so you don’t have to wait for Soul’s attack animations to fully recover before you can defend. If an enemy swings while you are halfway through a light attack, tap L1 immediately to cancel recovery into a deflection.
Enemy Attack Cues: Blue Flash and Red Flash
Normal guards or bosses you’ll fight throughout the game give a few attack hints on what they’re about to execute with color-coded glints, and figuring out how to react to each strike is the difference between whether you counterattack or take lethal damage.
Blue Flash Attacks (Parry to Counter)

When an enemy flashes bright blue, they’re winding up an empowered swing.
- If you block: Your guard will absorb the hit, but it drains a large part of your Sha-Chi and usually breaks your guard right away.
- If you parry: Pressing L1 when the strike lands completely negates the blow, strips a massive chunk of enemy posture, and triggers a Ghoststep that teleports Soul directly behind the attacker for an unobstructed punish.
Red Flash Attacks (Unblockable – Dodge Only)

When you see red flash on an enemy’s weapon or body before he performs an attack, you can’t block this move.
- Don’t press L1, because parrying and blocking will fail, leaving you vulnerable to taking full damage and suffering a knockdown.
- How to Counter: Press R1 / Circle to dodge just when the red attack swings through. A perfect dodge against this slash also triggers a Ghoststep, which lets you slide through the hit and end up behind the enemy to deliver a surprise attack.
How to Deflect Projectiles
You can block and parry standard projectiles, like thrown daggers, arrows, and bullets. Parrying an archer’s arrow or a gunman’s bullet reflects it right back at the shooter, which eliminates ranged threats right away when you’re dealing with a chaotic mix of baddies.
