The Armor of the Undying is the first strong armor set in Ghost of Yotei you can unlock by completing the Mythic Tale: The Undying Samurai in the Ishikari Plains. It rewards players who learn weapon alignment, letting you heal when you stagger foes, extend your Perfect Parry and Dodge timing, and deal heavy stagger damage during Focus Attacks. Getting this Undying armor set involves some progress, but it is absolutely worth the effort, giving Atsu a big advantage early in her journey. Here’s how to find and get the Armor of the Undying, the best early game armor set in Ghost of Yotei.
How to Start The Undying Samurai in Ghost of Yotei
Once you’ve unlocked Ishikari Plains through the main story mission, The Road to Ishikari (first mission of the main tale The Oni), speak to the locals around Nakagoya Spring. You’ll hear about a strange storyteller named Ugetsu, who has been reciting stories about a deathless warrior.
Follow the lotus flower icon on your map to move north of Nakagoya Spring in Storyteller’s Rest at Masked Man’s Quarry, near a destroyed camp marked by claw marks and wood blocks.
You’ll find Ugetsu sitting there, half-crazed and drumming on bits of timber. Speak to him to trigger a cutscene to begin the Undying Samurai tale, where you will be tasked to collect four Wind Chimes.
Ghost of Yotei Four Wind Chimes Locations
Ugetsu claims the Undying Samurai can only be summoned by ringing four Wind Chimes scattered across the plains. Once you’ve accepted the task, you can track them by holding your chime and following the wind’s direction.
First Wind Chime
You won’t have to go far — the first chime is right next to the site of a bear attack, close to a tree near Ugetsu’s camp. The beast will charge you immediately. If you’ve got fire bombs or a bow, it’s best to attack the bear from a distance. Once the bear falls, collect the first Wind Chime hanging from the tree branch.
Second Wind Chime
The second Wind Chime is just south of the first chime’s location on a small cliff beside the giant tree. It’s hanging at a spear’s head, stuck in the ground through the corpse. There is no bear fight here, so relax and collect it.
Third Wind Chime
The third chime is gruesome. Ride west from Nakagoya Spring toward the Stone Jaw Coast cliffs, where you’ll find a body hanging from a tree.
Go near it on the cliff’s ledge to see the R2 prompt to use the grapple, which will cut the body loose, and it will fall on the lower ledge. It’s not a human thing to do, but that poor guy is already dead, and Atsu will say sorry to him, so don’t worry. Then climb down to retrieve the chime from the corpse.
Fourth Wind Chime
The final chime can be found along the Rumoi River, where a scavenger ronin is looting a corpse. From Stone Jaw Coast, ride north to reach the river.
In the open field filled with the purple flowers, you’ll see a ronin beside the big withered tree. Defeat him, loot his body to get the fourth Wind Chime. Once you have all chimes, swipe up on the touchpad to let the wind guide you to the Undying Samurai’s resting place.
How to Reach the Undying Samurai’s Lair
Follow the wind west of the Rumoi River until you reach a cliff overlooking a foggy bay at the shown location in the above image.
Grapple along the cliff ledge to drop down and then through rock handholds to move down further. You’ll come across a cave opening towards the left of the ledge.
Crawl through the rocky path going down, and at its end, go through a narrow gap through the cliffs on the left. The path in the cave isn’t straightforward: there are gaps to jump, grapple through ledges, and it’s dimly lit. If you struggle to see, increase brightness slightly in the settings. You’ll know you’re close when you spot loot boxes and banners leading further inside. Eventually, the tunnel opens into a shrine chamber with four wooden poles.
How to Summon and Defeat the Undying Samurai
Place each Wind Chime on a pole in the shrine. As the last one rings, the Undying Samurai appears — a heavily armored warrior wielding a wooden shield and a corrupted blade. The Undying Samurai relies on punishing counterattacks, so don’t rush him. Time your dodges, bait his shield bashes, and attack during his recovery frames.
If you’ve unlocked Perfect Parry or Focus Attack, this is where the armor’s future perks begin to make sense; they directly amplify these techniques. He uses Oni’s Flame on his sword, so it’s better if you have it as well in this fight. He doesn’t have many attacks up his sleeve, just be wary of his sword strikes and powerful leg kicks. Once he falls, Atsu collects the Armor of the Undying.
After that, a cutscene triggers in which Atsu has his last conversation with Ugetsu, where he gives an end to the story and rewards Atsu with some Mon for her efforts.
Armor of the Undying Effects and Perks
The Armor of the Undying revolves around weapon alignment, which means you get bonuses when wielding the weapon type that directly counters your enemy’s. Each upgrade improves these effects.
Tier I
- Restores a small amount of health when staggering enemies (while aligned)
- Extends Perfect Parry and Dodge window
- Focus Attacks get a small stagger boost
Tier II–IV (Upgraded via Armorer)
- Great health restoration on stagger
- Further increased Perfect Parry/Dodge timing
- Strong stagger damage during Focus Attacks
Even at the base level, the extended dodge and parry windows make early fights very easy. At Tier IV, the set turns Atsu into a precision duelist — punishing, reactive, and practically immortal if played smart.
Upgrade and Dyes
You can upgrade the Armor of the Undying up to Tier IV by visiting an Armorer like Ginji in Ishikari Plain. Upgrading not only improves its perks but also adds cosmetic flourishes — a cape at Tier III and fur accents at Tier IV.
Many dyes can customize the look, including:
- Summit’s Snow (default) – classic black and white with red trims
- Jade Dragon – deep green and gold for the legendary touch
- Gilded Pride – blazing gold with orange edges, sold in the Crimson Dye House
If you want to keep the high-tier perks but prefer a simple look, you can wear earlier visual tiers while retaining full bonuses.
Is the Armor Worth It?
Yes, Armor of the Undying is worth it mainly early in the game. It gives you survivability without relying on heavy defense, rewarding timing instead of brute force. The healing-on-stagger mechanic alone can carry you through Ishikari’s toughest bandit camps and Oni Raiders. Paired with a weapon-aligned stance, it turns Atsu into an unstoppable counter-striker.
