For Whom The Bridge Tolls is a side quest in The Outer Worlds 2 that unlocks in Paradise Island. It starts as a simple “fetch two people” errand, but things get weird fast. Senior Warden Weintraut, who guards the only bridge connecting the southern and northern halves of Paradise Island, refuses to let you cross unless you bring her two condemned “traitors” to execute.
The problem is that one’s already dead, and the other isn’t too keen on volunteering for an execution. This walkthrough will walk you through all the objectives to complete From Whom the Bridge Tolls in The Outer Worlds 2.

How to Start the For Whom the Bridge Tolls Quest in The Outer Worlds 2

You’ll first visit the Bridge of the Reverent while chasing De Vries in the main questline on Eden. The bridge is heavily guarded, and you’ll meet Senior Warden Weintraut standing before the bridge to stop you from crossing it.

Talk to her and she’ll explain her terms: she’ll only allow you to move through the bridge to the Vox Relay Station if you hunt down and deliver two faction traitors — Ida Rutledge and Charlton Weintraut (her cousin). Accept her deal, and the quest For Whom The Bridge Tolls will be added to your journal.
Watch your step as you move; the area around the bridge is lined with mines, and the guards won’t hesitate to open fire if you get too close uninvited.
Where to Find Ida Rutledge

Ida is supposed to be working at Sovereign’s Sweet Spire Grove, located southwest of Fairfield and just northeast of the bridge. You can spot it easily on your map — it’s a tall spire jutting out from the cliffs.

Once you arrive, you’ll notice a busted elevator at the base of the cliff. If you have the Engineer 3 skill, you can repair it on the spot and ride it up. If not, climb the boxes and scaffolding to the left until you find a path up the rocks that takes you to the top through some small climbing.

In the upper area, you’ll see a worker named Jackson Plum take a fatal leap off the tower. Loot his body for some notes and move toward the top platform, where you’ll find two stuck Auntie’s Choice workers who’ll fill you in on what happened to Ida. You’ll then come to know that she’s already dead in a workplace “accident” that left her remains tangled in the harvester’s gears nearby.

Pick Ida’s severed arm from the conveyor belt to the left ahead of the corpse because that’s all the available proof Senior Warden Weintraut needs. With that morbid trophy in hand, it’s time to hunt down the second target.
Where to Find Charlton Weintraut

If you have already finished “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice!” quest, then Charlton will be in Fairfield. Otherwise, you’ll find him in Westport, west of Fairfield, and moving northeast from Ida’s location.

You’ll counter him, usually standing near the central plaza. Of course, he’s not about to volunteer for execution, so you’ll have to do some digging to find leverage.
Investigate Charlton House

Head west from his meetup location toward the coast behind Westport to find his home. It’s easy to miss — a small structure surrounded by hostile Crabbles. Take them out and enter his house.

Inside, you’ll find a terminal you need to use to find a few revealing logs under the file “Hidden Ambitions.” These notes confirm two things: Charlton is secretly sympathetic to Auntie’s Choice, and he is addicted to their sugary Purpleberry Krunch snacks.
Collect the Purpleberry Krunch box inside the room, and don’t miss the Shaina Grade Tossball Card on his desk beside the terminal for a permanent health upgrade. Now you’ve got everything you need to confront him.
Convince Charlton to Go to the Bridge

Return to Charlton and call him out. Let him know you’re aware of his secret Auntie’s Choice connection and pretend to be a fellow believer if you want to earn his trust faster. With that conversation, you unlock new dialogue routes that won’t disappear, even if you fail the first persuasion check.
You must have Speech 3 ability unlocked because you can’t convince him otherwise to follow you to the bridge. If your skill isn’t high enough, go level it up first or complete the companion quest “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice!” You’ll cross paths with Charlton again during that one.
Once your Speech is high enough, talk to him again. Choose these dialogue lines to persuade him:
- “There’s an issue at the bridge that requires a true devotee. Someone willing to sacrifice.”
- “You work for Auntie’s Choice now. Uh… go convert your cousin Marilyn to the cause, too.”
- “What happened to ‘I throw caution to the wind!’? Are you a Get Up and Go Getter, or not?”
If you play your cards right, Charlton reluctantly agrees to “fulfill his duty” and walk himself to his death.
Return to Senior Warden Weintraut on the Bridge

Head back to the Bridge of the Reverent and talk to Senior Warden Weintraut. Charlton will already be kneeling, waiting to be executed if you completed his part correctly. You can optionally mention Charlton’s Purpleberry Krunch addiction to Weintraut for an extra 50 Bits and more XP.
Once the grim ceremony is done, hand over Ida’s arm to complete the proof-of-delivery. Weintraut keeps her word — the bridge opens, giving you full access to the northern part of Paradise Island, so you head to the Vox Relay for your chase. You’ll earn 2160 XP and open a path leading into the next major storyline area for The Saboteur of Paradise main quest and other good side missions.
Quest Rewards
- 2160 XP
- Access to the Bridge of the Reverent (fast travel unlocked)
