The Spider Lily General is a Mythic Tale in Ghost of Yotei you can complete in the Tokachi Range to get the powerful Spider Lily Armor. This Myth is part eerie legend, part intense duel, and tells the story of a once-famous general now locked far away. Our The Spider Lily General walkthrough will tell how to complete this side quest by finding all key locations and defeating the general.
How to Start The Spider Lily General
You’ll find this quest in the Tokachi Range in The Lone Wolf chapter. Travel to the southern end of the Tokachi Range, where you’ll come across a Mysterious Gate south of Shizunai Woods, surrounded by pale fog and red spider lilies.
Right when you’re about to enter the gate, a cutscene triggers in which Storyteller Ugetsu calls Atsu from behind and tells a story. Listen to him first who warns that the Spider Lily General’s spirit still haunts the land, driven mad by grief and bloodlust. Once done with the story, pass through the gate to start The Spider Lily General Mythic Tale, where your map will be marked with the haunted plateau area.
Explore the Haunted Plateau
Move south from the gate into the haunted plateau. The area is quiet and surreal — mist-covered paths lined with lanterns guide your way up.
Move upstairs until you reach the Abandoned Tominaga Estate and follow the path straight to reach a massive locked gate sealed with four heavy locks and strong chains all over it. Every lock requires a spirit key hidden around the haunted plateau.
Spider Lily General Locked Gate Keys Locations
Pagoda Key
Standing with your back toward the locked gate, you’ll spot a tall pagoda on the left. The key is inside the wooden chest to the other end of this pagoda, next to a few lit candles. Circle behind it to open the chest to collect the pagoda key. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also climb the pagoda for a bonus collectible hat, but it’s optional.
Graveyard Key
Keep moving west from the pagoda to the western part of the plateau, and you’ll reach a gravesite. It’s overgrown and eerily silent except for the flickering candles. Defeat the Saito’s soldiers patrolling here, then climb to the higher cliff from the stairs you can see ahead. Walk some distance and climb to the top through a climbable wall using rock handholds.
Take the left path from the top to get to the graveyard with more Saito Outlaws standing there. After defeating them, collect the Gravestone Key from the corpse just before the shovel, stuck in a pile of dirt.
Maze Key
Return to the locked gate and from the gate’s end, take the path on the right. Follow it northeast of the plateau into a bamboo forest that forms a twisting maze.
Inside, you’ll reach a Bamboo Strike with no bamboo on it, surrounded by multiple branching paths. Follow the correct path with red spider lilies. Whenever you walk the flower’s path, you’ll loop back to the entrance with one bamboo piece added on Bamboo Strike, and the flowers will be moved to a different path every time.
You need to move the path with spider lilies three times before you come across the Maze Valley Bamboo Strike, now the bamboo pieces on it. Collect the Maze Key beside the Bamboo Strike, and although not required for the key, you can also complete the bamboo challenge to increase your spirit.
Cave Key
From the locked gate’s end, again head right toward the eastern cliffs, where you will reach the Southern Caves with a small cave entrance and one Saito guy sitting on its left, whom you should completely ignore and move past.
Enter the cave and keep moving on the path that turns right until you reach a climbable wall with handholds. Climb to the top and on the right, squeeze through the narrow tunnel to the other end.
Follow the path, cross the small wooden bridge, and go through the narrow cave opening to reach the area with ancient paintings on the walls, which were painted by the General’s daughter. The fourth and final Engraved Key is there waiting to be picked. Now, slide down the slope that leads you back outside.
Open the Locks at the Gate and Explore the Abandoned Estate
With all four keys in hand, return to the locked gate at the center of the haunted plateau. Press R2 as prompted to interact with it to open the gate with a satisfying clang.
Beyond lies the Abandoned Tominaga Estate, a once-grand samurai compound now buried in silence and overgrowth. Move forward through the main courtyard, then enter the large house straight ahead. Examine the blood-soaked mat in the room that should be the place of his daughter’s death.
Head back out, then through a side door that leads to an old training yard. Investigate the dark bloodstains in the dueling ring. Atsu claims this is the spot where Spider Lily General’s daughter might be injured.
Once done, move further into the Yamane Bluffs, where you’ll come across the small bamboo door you can pull down with the grappling hook. Squeeze through the narrow opening to finally enter the dueling arena, triggering the cutscene before the boss fight.
How to Defeat the Spider Lily General in Ghost of Yotei
The Spider Lily General boss fight is easily manageable because he doesn’t have any fancy attacks up his sleeve. The only thing is he is fast but fair if you know your parry timings. At first, he uses his katana with a mix of blue glint (parry) and red glint (dodge) attacks, which you should dodge and parry and wait for his combos to finish before striking back. Watch for his slow spin slash without a glint; it’s easy to parry and gives a clean opening.
At half health, he swaps to a kusarigama, extending his reach and speed. Then you can swap to Yari as no other weapon is better than this spear to counter the kusarigama. Switch between parries and side dodges since he likes to feint mid-combo. When his health drops low, he’ll eventually yield, ending the duel peacefully.
After that, the general disappears, the mist will be gone, and the area will become clear. It completes the Mythic Tale: The Spider Lily General, and you can get the Spider Lily Armor from the higher path right in front.
