Black Night Kubo won’t appear unless you meet his conditions. To summon him, you must be wearing black armor. You can either unlock Nine Tail Armor by completing the Blood on the Snow quest or visit the Black Dye Merchant west of the Teshio River to dye any armor set black.

Once equipped, return to the duel ring in front of the lamp, press R2 to interact with the woodblocks to clap them to summon Black Night Kubo.

How to Defeat Black Night Kubo in Ghost of Yotei

Kubo fights with precision rather than just charging at you; he weilds a long spear at the start with excellent reach. The key to taking him down is to land your shots at the right time, and that means using timed thrusts and feints, so patience and good timing are crucial for parries.

How to Defeat Black Night Kubo in Ghost of Yotei

Recommended Weapons:

  • Dual Katanas – Atsu’s katanas are a good choice to fight Kubo. They’re fast, and the stagger they deal can disrupt his rhythm and give you the upper hand.
  • You want to avoid using any big, slow weapons that are gonna leave you wide open for him to counterstrike – that’s not going to end well.

Combat Tips:

  • If you keep pressuring him, Kubo’s stagger meter fills up quickly. To break his guard and give him a hard time, mix your light and heavy attacks to keep him guessing, and make it tough for him to get back to his feet.
  • Watch out for when he pulls back his spear, usually when he’s getting ready to come at you with a big, powerful thrust. Time your parry on the glint or sidestep left for a safe counter.
  • Occasionally, he performs three quick stabs. To block these, you’ll need to parry each one as they come, and it can be as simple as tapping parry or spamming L1 to get through them.
  • Stay close to him where you can strike with your Dual Katana. At long distance, Kubo uses sweep attacks that are hard to dodge.

Ghost of Yotei Black Night Kubo’s Mask

When he’s low on health, Kubo will delay his wind-ups more frequently, so stay calm and wait for the final strike. Once defeated, loot Kubo’s body to get Black Night Kubo’s Mask, a rare cosmetic. Then, return to the Red Crane Inn to collect your 750 Coin reward from the Bounty Broker Kojiro.
