By the end of The Saboteur of Paradise main quest on Paradise Island in The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll be standing inside the Vox Relay command room with one of the most impactful decisions to make that can destroy or save a part of the island — should you send Vox Relay to Fairfield or Westport, or to space to save both towns? By default, Vox Relay drops in Fairfield, but you can change its direction to Westport, or even into space if your skills (or luck) are high enough.
It’s a genuine “no easy way out” kind of choice — one settlement burns, the other survives, and your reputation with factions (and companions) can take a hit permanently. This The Outer Worlds 2 guide explains what each choice does, what you’ll lose or gain, and which one is worth it with no serious consequences.
When You Face Vox Relay’s Choice in The Outer Worlds 2

Once you defeat Brigadier Montelli in the Vox Relay Station and dig up De Vries’ encrypted message, you’ll trigger the failsafe that launches the Vox Relay skyward, and the command is set to obliterate Fairfield if you don’t interact with the control panel to change the outcome. You can redirect the trajectory to Westport, and if you have high enough Hacker skills or the right trait, you’ll be able to reroute Vox Raley to the galaxy with the “send to space” options.
There’s no time limit here. Even though the quest warns you to escape before detonation, you can take your time to think it through, loot the place, and talk to your companions about it. But once you have picked the Vox Relay target and left the station, you can’t go back to change it again.
Option 1: Drop the Vox Relay on Fairfield (Default Setting)

Fairfield is Auntie’s Choice’s main settlement and home to Minister Milverstreet, Inez, and all the faction’s vendors and side quests. If you let the target fall to the default spot and walk away, the Vox Relay strikes Fairfield town and wipes it clean off the map.
The fallout for it is immediate and massive:
- Every Fairfield-related side quest, including A Refreshing Bit of News and The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice, fails.
- The town turns into a smoldering crater, and you can’t visit shops, vendors, or the city hall again.
- Inez permanently leaves your party out of disgust (and grief).
- You will face a big hit to your reputation with Auntie’s Choice — roughly 10 points.
What’s done is done, and there’s no recovery from it. Story-wise, Fairfield’s destruction is the worst outcome, especially if you helped Milverstreet or built rapport with Inez. The only reason to deliberately nuke the town is if you don’t mind a dark “anti-corporate” or chaos playthrough.
Option 2: Drop the Vox Relay on Westport

If you set the Vox Relay’s fall destination to Westport, Fairfield will be safe and sound, but it will annihilate the Protectorate’s settlement. The explosion will smash down Vigilant Hogarth’s main Westport building, and every important NPC and townfolk will die. Hogarth’s quest, The Saga of the Malfunctioning Mechanicals, and any side activities in Westport will be permanently locked.
However, there’s a silver lining, and it’s the smart play for most builds:
- If you have already completed The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice and helped Milverstreet relocate Westport to Fairfield, there won’t be a single death because the town is already empty. But after that, the town of Westport will cease to exist.
- You’ll take the 10 points hit to Protectorate reputation, but all your Auntie’s Choice relations remain intact.
- No companions leave, and all main quest progress continues.
This choice is still grim, but if Westport is evacuated previously, it’s the safe destructive option and the fallback if you can’t reroute the Vox Relay into space.
Option 3: Send the Vox Relay Into Space (Best Outcome)

If you have the Hacking level 4 skill, or if you picked the Lucky trait during character creation, you will have these dialogue options unlocked at the command terminal:
- “Set Destination: Space” (Hack 4 required)
- or “See if hitting it does anything” (Trait: Lucky)
Either choice launches the Vox Relay into orbit, saving both Fairfield and Westport from destruction, and there’ll be no reputation loss, companion fallout, and quest closures — it’s the right neutral ending to the Paradise Island part of the story.
If you don’t have the Hacking skill at level 4, then reload an earlier save, invest all your skill points into Hack, and bring a Bypass Shunt (found in the Vox Relay Station vending machines).
Which Choice Should You Make?
- Send to Space: The best overall ending with no losses and drawbacks, and your good reputation with factions remains intact.
- Westport (Evacuated): The second alternate choice if you can’t hack or lack the Lucky trait.
- Fairfield (Not Recommended): The “villain route” with loss to major quests, companion departure, and a lot of reputation damage.
For the best consequences and story progression, either send the Vox Relay to space or if you must drop it on Westport, first complete all the town quests and side activities and relocate the civilians to Fairfield before you head to Vox Relay Station to end the main quest.
