Wake Up Art Cullagh is a side quest in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 that unlocks at the Last Light Inn, in which you have to wake a plagued man who is required to lift the Shadow Curse from the cursed lands. Art (a century-old survivor of the Shadowfell) is stuck in an induced sleep that spells and potions can’t fix. To restore his senses, you need to track his footsteps back to the surgeon Malus Thorm. Here’s how to defeat the doctor, retrieve Art’s lute, and reunite him with Halsin.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Wake Up Art Callugh Guide

BG3 map showing the Art Cullagh room location in the Last Light Inn.

Once at the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, enter the large building on the western side. From the central bar, head inside the ground-floor room towards the northeast. You’ll find a wounded Flaming Fist contingent and Art lying unconscious, lost somewhere between sleep and madness, surrounded by NPCs, including his caretaker Fist J’ehlar and probably Counsellor Florrick if you’ve already completed the Rescue the Grand Duke quest.

Speak with Art Cullagh or people around him to learn about his illness. Interacting with him adds Wake Up Art Cullagh to your journal. His body is fine, but his mind is trapped somewhere else. Art will keep repeating a strange children’s rhyme about Thaniel. You can examine Art to learn further about his condition through Medicine, Arcana, History, or Bard-specific checks. None of these wakes him up, but they’ll give a clear picture:

  • His mind was gripped by the Shadowfell, not destroyed.
  • He is musically inclined.
  • Whatever trapped him is linked to memory, not physical damage.

If you’re playing as Bard, you’ll find his hands are calloused like someone who plays a stringed instrument. Fist J’ehlar will also show you Art’s last writ of duty, which mentions the House of Healing where you need to go next.

Talk to Halsin About Thaniel

Before heading to House of Healing, return to your camp and speak with Halsin. When you mention Thaniel’s name, the druid will immediately recognize it and say that Art must wake up. Halsin knew Thaniel before the curse took hold and thinks that Art couldn’t possibly know him if he hadn’t met Thaniel. He’ll suggest finding something personal to Art – a memory or item that could jolt his consciousness back.

Investigate the House of Healing

Map showing House of Healing in quest to wake Art in BG3.

House of Healing is located far southeast of Last Light Inn and southwest of Grand Mausoleum. Leave the inn and move south until you come across a damaged bridge leading west. Cross it to reach Reithwin Town, then move northwest past the Mason’s Guild toward the Grand Mausoleum waypoint. Next, follow the way south across massive tree roots until you find yourself on the House of Healing’s rooftop.

Find a window you can climb through, climb in, and exit right back out the other one onto the roof. Move south along the roof until you find a ladder down to ground level. Go down the bottom floor, open the double doors, and enter the building along with your party member. Inside the house, you’ll find one of the most disturbing scenes: Malus Thorm, an undead surgeon, calmly torturing a patient while his nurses, “Sisters,” follow his orders.

Sister Sinda allowing to go and see the doctor.

You will first encounter Sister Sinda, who will tell you to wait until your time arrives. Use the dialogue to tell her that you don’t have time and need to see the doctor immediately. Pass Bard and Performance checks to show the patient’s symptoms. She will then pity you and let you enter the theatre room to encounter Malus. In the first room to the right, you’ll also meet Sister Lidwin, who will be acting as a merchant with a few useful items; she buys and sells items for gold. Move to the back of the house to find Malus Thorm in the operating theatre.

Deal with Malus Thorm

Meeting Malus Thorn in the underground theater.

The simple way is to attack Malus Thorm and his four sisters and loot his body, but there’s another way to avoid the fight. With high enough Persuasion or class-specific dialogue choices, you can convince the sisters to experiment on each other or even on Malus himself. If you sneak around to the northern room before triggering the scene, you’ll find a Sharran medical book that unlocks strong dialogue options to push Malus to his own demise. Whether you talk him into it or spill the blood, loot his body to get the Battered Lute.

In case the checks fail or you prefer a fight, Malus and his nurses will become hostile. The battle can be tough, as Malus has around 300 HP and can multi-attack when his health drops below 110 HP. Use AoE attacks like Fireball or Crowd Control to survive the battle.

Wake Art Callugh

Playing Battered Lute to wake Art in BG3.

Return to Last Light Inn, get closer to Art Cullagh, and interact with him while carrying the lute. You’ll get a prompt to play the instrument. Don’t worry about your character’s musical skills – even if you can’t play worth a damn, awkwardly plucking at the strings is enough. The familiar sound of his own lute snaps Art awake instantly. He will ask about Thaniel and mention that Thaniel told him to find Halsin.

Art giving some clues about trapped Thaniel.

Cullagh warns that Thaniel is trapped somewhere in the Shadowfell. The only clue he provides about his location is the scent of lavender in the dark and cursed lands. Halsin wants to rescue Thaniel to break the Shadow Curse. It will progress the story forward into the Lift the Shadow Curse quest. Halsin will ask you to meet him by the lakeside, where you’ll need to defend a portal while he rescues Thaniel from another dimension.
