Death Stranding 2: On the Beach continues Sam Porter Bridges’ surreal journey through a fractured world, this time stretching across Mexico and Australia. Like its predecessor, the game is released with an episodic structure including cinematic storytelling, cryptic characters, and Kojima-special twists that walk the line between sci-fi and existential dread.
You are probably here looking for a complete breakdown of all episodes and main orders in Death Stranding 2. To track your progress, hunt for a missed objective, or to learn how the story revolves around these chapters, this guide has you covered. We’ll tell all episodes (or chapters) of Death Stranding 2, and explain the structure of the main and side orders.
All Episodes in Death Stranding 2: From Sam to One Day
Death Stranding 2 has a total of 17 Episodes, two more than the first game. The naming is minimalist, usually thematic or character-centric. Episode 1 begins with Sam’s return and Lou by his side, while the rest explore themes such as transformation (Chrysalis), devastation (Quake), and isolation (Puppets, Isolation, Fragile, etc.).
Unlike the original Death Stranding, Episode 2 is totally cinematic with no gameplay, while Episode 17 is a sort of open-world epilogue, which lets you continue the adventure or further exploration after the main storyline concludes.

All Order Types in Death Stranding 2
Death Stranding 2 has different order than the main game. Orders are missions, and they are of four types in the game.
- Main Orders (Story Progression): These are musts to get through the story for the game’s ending. You’ll build infrastructure, fight BTs, reclaim territory from brigands, and encounter boss battles.
- Sub Orders (Optional Side Missions): Sub Orders unlock as you continue to link NPCs to the Chiral Network. These usually offer exclusive gear and additional story nuggets. While optional, many players consider them important to complete due to their great rewards and storytelling tie-ins.
- Standard Orders (Repeatable Delivery Tasks): Standard Orders don’t progress the story but reward you with Likes and upgrade opportunities. These are good to level up facilities or increase Porter Grade, but you can skip any you don’t like to play.
- Aid Requests (Randomized Open World Events): These are the odd jobs: build a ladder here, recover cargo there, clear out a threat somewhere else. They flesh out the world and are great for immersion, but vary a lot in utility and difficulty.
All Main Orders in Death Stranding 2
Below, we have listed all 49 Main Orders, including their objectives and notable mission traits. Although we tried to keep spoilers light, mission names and objectives may still reveal key plot or gameplay details.
Note: Some Orders include special tags:
- [Hazardous]: Risk of explosion, BT infestation, or dangerous enemies.
- [Breakable Cargo]: Must be delivered undamaged.
- [Do Not Submerge]: Cargo is water-sensitive.
- [Elimination]: Combat-heavy missions, often involving boss fights or outposts.

Should You Do Sub-Orders, Standard Orders, and Aid Requests?
Sub Orders can often reward you with valuable equipment, and most of these are intelligently designed to complement the next Main Order. I recommend you should go for them to increase your survival chances in the very hostile Australian zones. Standard Orders, though, are grindy, but they have their place. They can help to max port rank, unlock cosmetic badges, or earn specific Likes from facilities. Aid Requests are mini-quests with worldbuilding value. It’s interesting to help a stranded porter rebuild a bridge or deliver vintage gear, but they’re rarely “must-do.”
Post-Game: Episode 17 and Open World
After the story wraps in Episode 16, the game enters Episode 17: One Day without main orders. You’re free to explore, complete leftover side content, and work up with any deliveries you didn’t get to during the main game. It’s even the best time to tackle high-difficulty Standard Orders and increase the rank with Chiral Network nodes.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach leans harder into structure and mission variety than its predecessor, but it still preserves the uniquely meditative pace the series is known for. With 49 Main Orders and 17 Episodes that carefully reveal Sam’s personal and philosophical journey, this sequel delivers a deep experience without bloating the design. Stick to the path when the story demands it. Go off the path when the world invites you.
