Larian Studios has confirmed that crossplay for Baldur’s Gate 3 is on the horizon. This comes in tandem with the release of the much-anticipated RPG game on the PlayStation 5. But before you dust off your adventuring gear for some epic dungeon-crawling with friends on other platforms, take note: it’s not coming yet.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Michael Douse, Larian Studios’ Director of Publishing, stated that crossplay has always been in the cards for the game. “It was always in the planning, but we knew it wouldn’t be for launch,” Douse confirmed. “It’s in the roadmap, and though we have an idea of when we’d like to get it ready, we don’t want to put a date on it until we’re sure.”

While Baldur’s Gate 3 crossplay may not be available at the moment, the PS5 launch allows your console friends to finally join the ranks of the BG3 community. They can take their time looking into the game’s vast single-player offerings, learning its intricate story, and mastering its expansive universe before jumping into cross-platform multiplayer fun.

Larian Studios has also announced that an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is slated for release later in 2023. The game’s cross-platform future promises to bring together players of all experience levels and platforms, from PC fanatics to console gamers.

Why Baldur’s Gate 3 Crossplay is a Big Deal?

Many of us who play on PC have already dedicated a lot of hours to the game, accomplishing quests and trying out different character setups. The appeal of crossplay extends beyond just playing with friends on different platforms; it’s also the opportunity to explore the game’s depth and breadth from a different perspective.

For instance, I’m juggling a couple of playthroughs—one solo and another in a full party with friends. I’ve been amazed by how different each experience feels, as Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a multitude of builds and strategic approaches that make every decision a fork in the road and every battle a unique challenge.

Aside from crossplay, Larian Studios has kept the game fresh with regular patches. Recent updates provide a more refined experience with additional features, including the option to remove player-created characters from your group. This makes the time while we wait for crossplay a little more bearable by allowing players to try out alternative co-op party formations.

It’s no secret that adding crossplay to Baldur’s Gate 3 would be a massive boon for sales. Although there’s no concrete release date for the feature, the PS5 launch and the future Xbox version are steps in the right direction. It’s a great time to be a Baldur’s Gate fan, whether deep into a PC playthrough or just starting on the console.
