In a remarkable display of success, Nintendo has announced the soaring sales of its latest blockbuster game, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” Surpassing expectations, the game has sold a staggering 18.51 million units as of the close of June 2023, according to the company’s quarterly financial results. Launched barely a month before, on May 12, this game has bolstered Nintendo’s software sales and stimulated sales for the Nintendo Switch to a degree unseen since its introduction in 2017.

A critical factor in these heightened sales figures has been the loyal fanbase of its precursor, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” However, the game’s allure is not limited to these devotees. Intriguingly, an expanding share of the sales is attributed to consumers new to the franchise.

Nintendo’s triumphant streak is not confined to this singular title. The company has also reaped considerable success from the “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” released on April 5, which pulled in an astounding $1.349 billion in worldwide box-office revenue. With the robust performance of other Mario games and merchandise, Nintendo’s Intellectual Properties (IPs) have been instrumental in fortifying its overall business.

The Nintendo Switch console sales exhibited a promising year-on-year growth of 13.9%, translating to 3.91 million units. Simultaneously, software unit sales demonstrated a robust year-on-year growth of 26.1%, reaching 52.21 million units. The effect of these sales figures is manifested in Nintendo’s overall performance, with sales escalating by 50% year-on-year to 461.3 billion yen ($3.2 billion), and a net profit spike of 52.1%, settling at 181 billion yen ($1.2 billion).

Fueled by the exceptional success of “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” Nintendo’s future exhibits a prosperous sheen. As the anticipation for the forthcoming next-gen console in late 2024 mounts, this financial success stands as a testament to Nintendo’s inventive prowess and enduring resonance with its audience.
